NCAA Selection Show

Re: NCAA Selection Show

You're right; hotels in Boston are really pricey. And don't forget the Mass Turnpike -- they charge cash to use the roads. I would also imagine that the mints they put on the pillows are stunningly more expensive in Beantown. No savings is too marginal... Regrettably, Boston is no longer allowed to host NCAA Games.

Our hotels are reasonably priced. No tollbooths on the Columbus Freeways. We'll cover the cost of the mints. It's short notice, but we can handle it. We'll be glad to host Saturday's game. ;)

OK, Back To Reality:

1. I am grateful that the Buckeyes get to play an actual NCAA Game in the first round of the tournament.

2. I'm also genuinely pleased that both BC & NE get to play National Games in the first round as well, rather than a "Play-In Game" against each other.

3. I just wish that all 8 teams could be treated equally well.

4. It's truly an honor to play BC in the 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament. Congratulations to the Buckeye players and coaches. Make the most of your opportunity! Here's to hoping for a great game.

I am thrilled to play Ohio State. What a joy it is to play a legitimately national opponent that we never play -- actually, have we EVER played Ohio State?? -- wish the whole tournament could be like this. It's a real treat.

They’ve never played each other. And it’s OSU’s first final 8. So fun.

To the best of my knowledge, this will be the first ever meeting in Women's Hockey.

In the spirit of small talk: The Buckeyes lead the All-Time Football Series 3-0. I personally attended the 34-29 Win in 1989; a Buckeye Goal Line Stand ended that game.

In Men's Hockey, BC leads the All-Time Series 4-2. OSU won the most recent meeting on 12/28/2016 by a score of 3-2. But BC won the game of greatest consequence; a 5-2 victory at the 1998 Men's Frozen Four.

The meetings are indeed rare treats. And again, for Women's D-1 Hockey, it's literally the first.

I honestly have no idea if the two teams have ever met in Women's Club Hockey...

We actually have a football series inked in for 2026 and 2027 actually -- fun fact!

Re: NCAA Selection Show

So, two of these teams are barely .500 teams this season.

What does that say about the quality of D1 in the last 10 years?

Doe it say anything?

I think the overall quality/talent level has decreased noticeably in the last 10 years.

I don’t know the answer to your question. Is it possible the hockey has gotten less physical? When I watch BC I don’t know if they are amazing for making it look so easy or if no one plays physical against them. On the flip side I look at the goal where UConn went up 3-1 in that game, the girl who scored the goal, I think on a rebound, was touched by no one, in a semi final game. I can’t wrap my head around it.

At the same time, I go way back to a highlight from earlier in the season where Wisc beat Minn in OT. In the play, a Minn player literally glides from the offensive blue line back into the Minn zone and wisc scores on the play in OT. It was mind boggling to me. I know skill beats heart, but that stuck me as a situation where you skate your butt off and get back.

Then there was Brit Howard dipsy doodling against Mercyhurst on offense against Mercyhurst the other day. Puck in and out of the feet fancy moves but I have to think you eventually get knocked unconscious if you do that. Obviously not, because Brit Howard has had a stellar career. Maybe the game has just evolved and this is where it’s at right now.

My impression is that skill level has risen in all facets of the game, it’s just evolving. I feel like almost all teams can execute some beautiful plays, but the speed at which they can do so varies from team to team.

I will take the stars of yester year still though today. They would do fine in today’s women’s D1.

I think that the bottom end of the sport has improved considerably, at least over the last 15 years. There used to be a bigger disparity between the haves and the have nots. The Harvard team of 2002-03 would have a harder time scoring 17 goals on BC today.

Parity, don't you love it. I do.

Play, at least in the WCHA, has gotten a lot more physical in recent years. The officials have almost stopped calling bodychecking, and the players have responded. I am not fond of the trend.

There were a lot of elements to that. One of the key ones is that Minnesota only had 3 1/2 defensemen for that most of that game, two of whom were freshmen, and they were exhausted by the overtime. There was also some general team dysfunction early in the season, that mostly seems to have been straightened out.

This has been said by sports fans since Ancient Greece, despite the fact that the athletes consistently have gotten better, at least since the early 20th century.

This is why I am leaning towards OHIO to win this one. They are very physical. If they roll lines and hard forcheck I am not sure how BC will respond. Ref's could have a big influence on this game depending on how its called. They let a lot go in the WCHA.

That’s interesting about the WCHA being more physical. After RMU beat OSU In OT after OSU got in to penalty trouble, Muzzerall gave a quote referring to East Coast refs. I didn’t know what to make of it, but to hear you say WCHA almost allows body checking, maybe that is it. To me, makes the upcoming OSU BC game even more exciting. It sounds like it might be two different styles of play colliding.

Appreciate your context on the Minnesota play I referenced.

As far as people saying since ancient Greec that they’d take prior stars, despite players getting better, I would say that women’s ice hockey is a young sport as far as NCAA. As an example I’ll give Caroline Oullette. I think she last played in 2003 in NCAAs? She is literally still playing CWHL, after just having had a child, and has five points in five games. Last year she won a Clarkson Cup. As I said in my original post I think the NCAA talent has increased in every facet of the game. Bottom liners from 15 years ago wouldn’t make today’s rosters. But a young Oullette, Chu, Darwitz, Wendell (and I am sure the list goes on), they would do just fine in today’s NCAA.

Agree with the comments about the refs. Big challenge for the refs, and potentially for Muzerall to guide her team to victory if they get into penalty trouble. Alternatively if the refs let it go and it’s physical, how will BC respond? Or maybe this is a made up narrative, BC does play physical, can totally handle it. Is it Saturday yet? I want to watch the game!

I'm pretty sure that they'd be effective players, but they wouldn't stand out in the way they did 12-15 years ago.

The bottom 12 penalized teams nationally include all 7 WCHA teams.

FWIW-the person sitting next to me at the game yesterday commented that the Badgers are going to run into trouble in the NCAA tourney because there would be no WCHA refs in their games and they won't be able to play their game..or they will spend the game in the box..lol

I'm not so sure about that, but....

It is no longer true that refs from a league can't officiate a game with one team from that conference. We have no idea who will ref Wisconsin's games, though I strongly suspect that it will be a WCHA crew for the quarterfinal in Madison.

When Natalie Darwitz was in HS, she set some crazy pinball-style scoring records, largely because she was competing against teams that were using traffic cones on their second and third lines. If Natalie started out today, she would still be the best player around, but would score half as many goals.
