NCAA Selection Show

I'm going to try not to sound cynical here, but you can't honestly believe that.

I think the talent level overall has increased recently but it may actually be more spread out than it used to be- when just a few top schools got all the talent. Now days more schools are attracting top players maybe because they’re offering great facilities (Colgate looks really nice), or high level education or maybe more scholarship money. Also some players may get the oppportunity for more playing time at a so-called lower tier program rather than riding the bench as a 3rd or 4th liner at an elite program. It’s great for women’s hockey that there are more attractive choices than just Wisconsin, Minnesota and BC. For most of these players hockey is for 4 years but the education is for a lifetime, so make a good decision!

Re: NCAA Selection Show

You're right; hotels in Boston are really pricey. And don't forget the Mass Turnpike -- they charge cash to use the roads. I would also imagine that the mints they put on the pillows are stunningly more expensive in Beantown. No savings is too marginal... Regrettably, Boston is no longer allowed to host NCAA Games.

Our hotels are reasonably priced. No tollbooths on the Columbus Freeways. We'll cover the cost of the mints. It's short notice, but we can handle it. We'll be glad to host Saturday's game. ;)

OK, Back To Reality:

1. I am grateful that the Buckeyes get to play an actual NCAA Game in the first round of the tournament.

2. I'm also genuinely pleased that both BC & NE get to play National Games in the first round as well, rather than a "Play-In Game" against each other.

3. I just wish that all 8 teams could be treated equally well.

4. It's truly an honor to play BC in the 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament. Congratulations to the Buckeye players and coaches. Make the most of your opportunity! Here's to hoping for a great game.

plenty of cheaper hotels outside Boston. Needham and Waltham are only 10-15 minutes out and no Mass Pike fee. Sheraton Needham now on booking.com for $103

Re: NCAA Selection Show

I'm pretty sure it changed a number of years ago, like before I switched from watching the men to the women. So, it's possible that it's not true on the women's side, now that I think about it.
I feel like I always remember it being ECAC refs in our tournament games, although (1) I could be entirely making that up in my head and (2) that doesn't necessarily mean it's allowed even if they can easily avoid it in the east...

Last year's semi final between BC and Wisconsin had ECAC refs; Wisconsin took three penalties, BC took four. In the final against Clarkson, it was Hockey East refs; Wisconsin took three penalties, Clarkson two. The quarterfinal against Robert Morris had WCHA refs, each team took four penalties.

Re: NCAA Selection Show

It occurred to me this morning that no matter what happened this afternoon, next Saturday, Wisconsin will be playing a team that beat them the last time they saw them. Then after the game, I thought about who they'd have been getting if the NCAA surprised use with full-out 'bracket integrity'. Northeastern... another team that beat them the last time they saw them! :-O

Not sure I can get wound up about bracket integrity for the NCAA quarter finals when the location of the conference tournaments and Frozen Four can have a bigger impact.

Minnesota (#3 of 7) and Northeastern (#4 of 9) lost all games against their conference tournament opponents away from home ice this year (Ohio State / Wisconsin, Maine / UConn).

Yikes, that is a STAT.

I can't speak for Northeastern, but Minnesota's results in Madison and Columbus were pretty much the same as their regular season results against the same teams at home. Indeed, the results against Wisconsin were exactly the same: two one goal losses. The Gophers were actually a better team on the road than at home this year. So, I'm not sure that having the WCHA playoffs at Ridder were much of a big deal.

Re: NCAA Selection Show

The bottom 12 penalized teams nationally include all 7 WCHA teams.

FWIW-the person sitting next to me at the game yesterday commented that the Badgers are going to run into trouble in the NCAA tourney because there would be no WCHA refs in their games and they won't be able to play their game..or they will spend the game in the box..lol

I'm not so sure about that, but....

What I find interesting is that just 4 years ago in Hamden, both the Badger and Gopher fans were commenting about how physical Clarkson's style was and that it would never work WCHA refs. Has the league changed that quickly? I could see Gophers fans being upset because they lost to us, but we didn't play the Badgers in that tournament and the Wisconsin fans left on day 2 were clearly in support of the Green and Gold.

As far as the refs are concerned, I believe D-1 hockey has done like we do in baseball. The leagues contract with an officials group. For example, my group does the Big East, ACC, and several others, all the way down to D-3 conferences and even NJCAA. You have to be approved per level and per conference, but there's nothing keeping an umpire from doing Big East and ACC games in the same season (except maybe scheduling). I know for a fact that some D-1 men's hockey officials officiate in all 3 eastern conferences, but it seems like there is some kind of step system. A few of the linesmen I've seen in ECAC games have been refs in AHA games in the same season.

Yes, I do. But it occurred to me after posting that comment that I should have maybe clarified it. I meant that I don't think that there are as many very talented players as a percentage of the whole as there was 8-10 years ago when UMD, UW, UM and Cornell, as examples, had several very talented players on their respective teams...not just one or two that stood out above the rest. As a result they were power house teams not just in a relative sense but in an absolute sense as well.

Sieve1's observation might possibly explain some of it, meaning that maybe the better talent is more spread out now, but even if that's the case, I think that there have been fewer exceptional players to spread around. And, if that's the case, it would go a long way to explaining Arm's point about parity.

Re: NCAA Selection Show

My thoughts on the selection show ... if they're going to have a broadcast and not mention a thing worthwhile that every poster on these boards doesn't already know, don't do the show. Just post the brackets. Hell, they couldn't even manage to get any footage from their #1 seed.

Yeah, right. Let's all relive the Gophers top 10 Pairwise road wins.

Put it this way:

Ohio State 16-2-2 at home. 7-8-2 away.

Wisconsin 16-0 at home. 13-4-2 away.

Far from fewer there are more good players now. I believe Muzzerall holds the records for most goals scored & she played for a coach who would not allow her team to outscore an opponent by more than 10 goals so her toal is probably half what it could be. The great players would now be facing much stiffer competition. Still great but not astronomically better than average.

I don't recall the physical play being an issue but they stifling forecheck sure was. I remember eeyore pointing out at the time also that CU moved the puck up ice quickly which denied MN the chance to counter attack.
