NCAA Quarterfinal Thread: Elmira vs Oswego State

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal Thread: Elmira vs Oswego State

What can I say that hasn't already been said? In the first two periods Oswego had a lot of good chances that didn't go but once they got up by two it was a different game. Oswego followed up Singletons goal by killing a 5 on 3 which included a shorthanded goal by Boots. Elmira was beaten at that point and even though they played right to the final whistle they just didn't have anything left.

Hare made a couple of real good saves and was just solid and focused all night. When he plays like that Oswego is very tough to beat as they just draw off his confidence and it allows them to settle down and just let it flow. I think he is definitely one of the most underrated goalies in D3 and he gets overlooked because of Oswego's team but he is a big part of their success.

Elmira had a few players that really played hard all night but they just seemed like they collectively lacked that killer instinct to just get in there and will a goal in. Boots did just that on Oswego's first goal and Elmira just stood around and let him do it.

Did Elmira honestly look like a team that deserved a bye to the quarters? I had a feeling this game was gonna look a lot like the first two games of the season for these two schools, and it did.

1-0 going to the third...wouldn't say it was a total embarrasment.

Elmira deserved a bye over Plymouth State and Wentworth based on their overall season bodies of work.

They played a very good 1st and 2nd, not to many quality chances that was the problem they took many shots from the perimeter .after that they ran out of gas ....and at $4.00 a gallon it was costly.....would say they belonged there, and we all know any team can beat any team on any given night, but not tonight for the eagles,Im sure they will be back with another quality team...

I'd say they deserved to be there. I watched the game on vid and backdraft's comments were on the nose. I'd say they belong more than a certain other team, but I don't want open that can of worms. :D

Sure. I guess I was angling at the fact SNC had a play in game, but they're in lake placid, so all's well that ends well.

I know Elmira plays in the impossibly tough, only rivaled by the WCHA or Hockey East, ECAC-W (even though the league generally does nothing in the NCAAs). But did anyone outside of the Elmira program think they were actually gonna win last night? Honestly? What did they end up with, 10 losses?

Once it was a 7/4 split without Adrian we truly had a Western/Eastern regional split which meant St. Norbert had to play in a play-in game.

I think the committee made the right decision considering Plattsburgh, Norwich, Oswego and Amherst all beat SNC in the head to head comparison.

I understand the reasoning behind snc's play in game.

There wasn't any lobbying from within the program to include EC in the field. In fact, not many of us who were actually watching them play thought they had a prayer of getting a bid. Obviously no one on the call had seen them play in 2012.

My wish from this past weekend is that the seldom used 2º criterion of winning percentage in the last third of the season be weighted more heavily so that the teams playing the best in March actually make the tourney. It does DIII hockey no good to select a team that Soared in November at the expense of a team that is peaking at the end of the season.

I'm proud of the program too, but we need to take the next step and win a national title. Four years in a row and we lost in the Quarterfinal round each time. It's time to take the next step!!

The question IS, How? We were very strong on D, great forwards that just couldn't get the goals when needed, and a goalie who was shaky a lot of the time. We need a goalie who can "stand on his head", a couple of "Killer" goal scorers, a couple of "play makers". Never going to be easy, too much "premium" talent out there.
Over all, a good season, some really great hockey and some really pathetic hockey too. Here's t next year's Senior Class, Git 'er Done!!
