Are you with the program / do you have inside knowledge? You speak like you have access to info / process we do not.

I am here on the ground in PHX and there isn't much of worth in the public space.

The former Green Beret who led an Aug. 20 outdoor workout that left an Arizona State University hockey player in the hospital was reportedly not under contract with the university.

The Arizona Republic reported that Tim Zeisel’s attorney, Buddy Rake, said he only had a handshake agreement with head hockey coach Greg Powers and staff.

Arizona Republic reporter Robert Anglen told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoke with Bruce & Gaydos on Tuesday that agreement violates ASU’s Athletic Department guidelines.

“The policy says if the university is going to bring in somebody … from outside to work with athletes, they have to go through a vetting process and they have to sign what’s known as a consultant police form,” Anglen explained. “The trainer and his lawyer both say that never happened.”

The Arizona Republic is, FWIW, what passes for the best local paper.
 
So basically Powers is a club coach with a Napoleon complex? Not really surprised as most of the people around ACHA have delusions of grandeur about how good they actually are (that's usually spoiled by teams like UAA in about 10 minutes).

I get why ASU doesn't want to get rid of him, it's a risk of the unknown (UAA's downhill slide started when they got rid of Brush for example) and he brings a ton of donor money, but he's also a real liability.

Based on the comments I saw on The Athletic’s Facebook page, he’s just another ASU fan defending the school with unwavering loyalty.

Seriously, there were so many “wait for the facts!” and “ nice hit piece” comments that it was hurting my brain.

Ordinarily in that situation, you'd kick Powers upstairs to keep working the phones and hire a head coach with proper NCAA experience. Problem solved.

However, from what I have heard over the years, Powers' relationship with the program's donors is cozier than most. If he gets ousted without their input, their donations could dry up. That's the risk you take when you allow the egos of big money donors to greatly influence and even outright make personnel decisions that should be made by an AD and administrators.
