NCAA Hockey - 2023/24 **Insert Witty Tagline**

North Dakota's loss to Omaha drops their comparison against the Mavericks and means the Pairwise doesn't just come down to RPI ranking. They're already winning the comparison with MSU on RPI, so no matter the result tomorrow they can't jump back into the one seeds. And MSU can't jump Denver so seeds 1-4 are now set with BC, BU, DU and MSU.

So, here is what I got for brackets:

Providence:
1. BC vs 16. Michigan Tech
8. Wisconsin vs 9. Quinnipiac

Maryland Heights:
4. Michigan State vs. 13. Western Michigan
5. Maine vs. 12. Cornell

Sioux Falls:
2. BU vs. 15. RIT
7. Minnesota vs. 11. Omaha

Springfield:
3. Denver vs. 14. Massachusetts
6. North Dakota vs. 10. Michigan

Would rather like to see them swap 5/6 instead of 6/7 due to RPI win by UND over Maine but then that affects 5/12, 6/11, and 7/10 instead of just the latter two in most projections.

As others have discussed elsewhere, the two rules saying hosts must be placed at site (even as a 4 seed) and no intraconf matchups are working against BU this year.

another reason why higher seeds hosting at home would be better

Imagine the sold out crowds at BC, BU, Denver, MSU, Maine, UND, UMTC and Wisconsin Madison.

It's quite nearly the best case imaginable for attendance capacity. The NCAA and host teams would bring in so much money compared to the regional setup.

I'm not going to do the math, but 70% attendance at these 8 arenas would easily outnumber what will actually be at the 4 regionals.

Outnumber? You're being too conservative. My guess is it would probably triple the announced attendance at the 4 regionals. I could envision 60,000 (or maybe more) people showing up at those 8 arenas for 1st round games. The regionals last year drew a total announced attendance (for both sessions, 1st and 2nd round games) of 45,622. 20,000 the first day and 25,000 the second.

If atmosphere and attendance mattered, its is a no-brainer what the NCAA should do with the hockey tournament. It would make the logistics of covering the 1st round perhaps a little more difficult and expensive, needing to go to 8 sites instead of 4, but the additional ticket sales would easily offset the costs.

This year's tourney is definitely a return of the Blue Bloods. Only 3 of the 16 have yet to lift the National Title. And all of the heaviest of all time hitters are there.

Heck, if the Springfield regional winds up as I predicted, the teams will have combined for 27 titles...surely a record.

Yeah I feel like the eastern rinks are all small but mariucci would get just over 10, grand forks is what 12? And the kohl holds 14

If you go by the the top 8 seeds hosting format, the capacities are:
BC - 7,800
BU - 6,300
Denver - 6,000
MSU - 6,500
Maine - 5,100
North Dakota - 11,600
Minnesota - 10,000
Wisconsin - 15,300

Almost all of those would be getting sellouts, if not all of them. That's 68,000 fans just for the first round.

Whereas next weekend will have games at arenas of:
STL - 2,500
Providence - 14,000
Sioux Falls - 10,700
Springfield - 8,000

Even if those are all sellouts, with the first round being package deals, the best you could hope for would be 35,000.

The problem I see is there are some schools it is hard to get to/from commercially on short notice. Also some schools likely have events already lined up at their rink that weekend so that could be an issue too.

I think the idea is that the vast majority of attendance would come from the home team's fans, that being the spoils of earning a higher seed, with a small contingent of rabid away fans doing what it takes to get wherever they need to be.

Also some schools likely have events already lined up at their rink that weekend so that could be an issue too.

You do understand they would make this decision well before the season where it would take effect even started, right? So those schools would keep this one weekend open, in theory.

I’m talking for the teams not fans. For schools like Maine times are tough financially and not sure they would want to leave a weekend open just in case.
