My Money's on the team in Green... MSU @ NMU Dec 4/5

Re: My Money's on the team in Green... MSU @ NMU Dec 4/5

I don't know if it's the building, the big sheet, the long roadtrip, or something else, but we always seem to have huge problems up in Marquette.

Considering the losing streak and how anemic our power-play has become in recent weeks, this trip could not come at a worse time.

It's a perfect storm. I cannot visualize any scenario that doesn't have Northern sweeping us.

Well, your powerplay is in luck, NMU is ranked around 36th in the nation at killing penalties, at a rate of 80%. On the other side of the special teams, NMU is 14th in the nation, scoring 23% of the time. Olver has 5 of the team's 14 PP goals.

The long road trip to Marquette??? Yeah, that hour and seven minute flight is a rough one! How do they do it? I do know they spent a lot of time crying that the league wouldn't put them in the luxury of the Landmark Inn for the playoffs last year, and they had to suffer with the common folk at the Ramada. Poor Sparty! Life is soooooooo tough.

As for NMU's goaltending, here are the November stats going into last Saturday's game: Stewart 3-0-2 2.13 GA .934 sv%, Ellingson 1-1-0 2.50 .918. One tough period hardly negates five outstanding games for Stewart. Each goalie had one tough game in November. Reid gave up five at Ohio State, Stewie, a 4 spot at Alaska.

Nice sandbagging.;)

Then let me try:
I like MSU's chances. Nice change of venue - they have 5 days to regroup instead of 4, and young players concentrate on ... well, concentrating every shift - the lack of which killed MSU last weekend. I'd say this could be a tidy 3-point weekend for us.

Oh and shut the ******* up, UMichDroolz

I can only imagine that studying for exams has put you in this frame of mind. That, or the chill you took from wearing shorts last Saturday has gone to your brain ... :D

This is not last year's team. This team is not going to roll over and die. The last two weekends have been a bump in the road. They need to get back to the things they were doing right. Find the power play, and all will be well.

Re: My Money's on the team in Green... MSU @ NMU Dec 4/5

MSU's goalie is going to be tough to beat. We can't depend on the "pretty goals" to be Sparty this weekend. Throw the puck at the net, get plenty of bodies in front and look for rebounds (if the refs don't get whistle happy). We are going to need to put a 25+ shot count on Palmisano each night to have a chance on winning the games. And sounding like a broken record: STAY OUT OF THE BOX!!! MSU's pp has been lacking, but we still can't give them opportunities. Anyone know who the refs for this weekend are going to be? not that it matters... they have their heads up their butts 90% of the time anyway. I'll say that we'll have at last 3 goals reviewed (total both sides) this weekend with at least 6 penalties for each side each game.

Dear Santa,

Please guide our Cats to stay out of the box and grant us another spectacular 2nd half of a season. A NCAA bid would be the best late Xmas present. I would like to take the 25 minute trip off of M10 to Ford Field and watch our Cats compete in the Frozen Four in April! Go Cats!!!!

It's easier said than done regarding staying out of the penalty box. This is the CCHA after all. You can expect a minimum of 5 powerplays a night.

A better rallying cry would be to improve our penalty kill. The Cats did a much better job Saturday night (7 for 8) at UA. Strong special teams play is a must in this league.

probly whatever team has the most gas going into the third period will draw the fewest penalties. With the exception of the Wisconsin game, NMU doesn't have much to fear from MSU lately if 'Cat's are a 'Cat short.
Bigger ice - Spartans need to hope they don't get down early.

You mean they don't drive up. At least they aren't as bad as Wisconsin when they come to Tech. They fly up, then rent a charter bus from a company out of Antigo, WI. Which is about halfway between Houghton and Madison.

It's a bus trip. Even in January. In fact, FYI the privileged rich of the big U had an unplanned extended stay - when they ended their series with Lake State - due to bad weather.

Nice rant, though :)

Is that a question or a statement?

Sorry, I had to.

When they came to the Berry last year for the playoffs, they were riding the bus. I talked with Lerg in a gas station in St. Ignace for a few minutes. Maybe that's why he had a lousey weekend.

Or maybe its because he was playing with a torn acl?
