Movies: Poor Things, Barbie and Oppenheimer are stuck in La La Land

If that's all you saw then that's all you saw. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I saw a good actress managing several different roles in several different languages, and far from being cliche playing off the cliches in a masterful way.
Besides delusional hooker, what other roles did she play? Delusional hooker "wife" does not count. When she continued to think her marriage was legit even after he ran away from is mommy and daddy to just go clubbing more, yea... As a story, she had the opportunity to really stick it to him and his family, but they didn't, and it wasn't until the very end that there was a hint of an interesting story between her and the body guard.

She happened to know some russian, but I didn't see that adding much to the story other than to hook up the two characters.

I was tired of her as a character well before they hooked up and got the Pretty Woman story going.

BTW, "good" isn't worthy of being nominated for an Oscar. Perhaps that point of view that I'm seeing it as is altering my expectations. Oscar should mean excellent and unforgettable as opposed to just "good".

The Substance could be fun in the right context- like the super late movie at a festival where you want to see something weird. But as an Oscar nominee, it was dreadful.

I got much more out of her performance than you. I would say you're the loser for it. But then again there are tons of actresses the gen pop swoons over who I think are blank fungibles, so we all have our tastes.

that's fine. It may be a good movie, but as an Oscar nominee? No. And that's the lens I saw it through.

Just saw The Brutalist. Better movie than Substance or Anora, and strong movie, but I'm not really sure it's *that* great. Very good.

Brody was great in it, but I got the vibe of the Great Gastby that I really didn't like at the same time.

For sure, it didn't feel like 3.5 hours.

I haven't seen Anora, but didn't it win at Cannes?
That will just make a certain type of viewer hate it even more.

Suffice that it's a decent storyline with good writing saved from being mundane by brilliant acting. Exactly what you want for the Oscar, which typically goes to an adequate actor executing a brilliant script.

Captain America was just a mid range Marvel movie. Fairly boring at this point. Good action sequences anyway.
We're 35 movies deep, everything is going to be boiled down as a "re-hash of ____'s plot."

Not the strongest Marvel film, but I thought it was good. Then again I actually liked The Marvels.

I had zero interest in that film but kind of followed the production from afar and it was doomed a long time ago. Sounds like the script was a mess and with the amount of reshoots they had to do the writing was on the wall. (and you could tell Di$ney had reservations as they never put on the full court press to try and pimp the film) To get an idea, since I know zero people who saw it, I read a few of the reviews...and I am not sure anything could have made that a good film. Even the good reviews make enough caveats that you can tell they are grading on a curve or trying not to upset corporate overlords.

I will say, if the trailers are a decent representation of the quality of the CGI...good lord what exactly did they spend the money on? It is bad...I mean they didn't even color match or filter it at all to make the foreground and background match or attempt to look like one shot. It looks like those TV shows that film inside the fake projected screen (like the Star Wars Shows do...and look mediocre if you don't have your TV tuned correctly) which is just lame and cheap.

Its too bad...seems like Di$ney/Marvel did the film dirty. It might eek out an ok profit (not in the US though...that dropoff was fierce) but you can tell Di$ney had zero interest in this project almost from the word jump. You combine that with the fact that they are now fully trying to bring back the stars from the previous films (RDJ and Chris Evans so far) and you can just see they are not confident in what is coming next and they know the audience is not as invested as they were pre-Endgame. The problem with episodic art is, if you give people a conclusion and a jumping off point they usually will. Too much competition for eyes and if people dont like a project they will tune it out and if that is tied to another project they likely tune that out as well.

E$PN is going to pay for this!

I just wonder why anyone in charge thought anyone other than the Marvel diehards were going to see a movie with a black Captain America.

I mean haven't they been paying attention these last eight years?

My wife and I took my daughter to see “Paddington in Peru” last night. She’s 5yo and loved it. You’ll see a number of familiar faces in the movie, almost all British and Antonio Banderas. They delivered mostly fun performances, clearly aiming how their lines, the bad guys not being too evil in their roles and most of the good guys being overly sweet or sentimental.

It was another DEI movie. I don't know why anyone bothers anymore.

Never mind the fact that there’s many, many people who are beyond tired of the superhero dreck
