Movies: Poor Things, Barbie and Oppenheimer are stuck in La La Land

Saw the new Captain America Brave New World. After 35 films in this shared Universe, there's not going to be a lot of uniqueness, but it took the theme of the political thriller of CA: The Winter Solider and made it's own riff. Good as a stand alone (they fill in what's needed) but it definitely leans into some back stories that never got fleshed out. It serves as a sequel to Edward Norton's The Incredible Hulk (which was long forgotten about until as of late), and picks up after Falcon and the Winter Soldier (which, IMO has some elements the new Marvel films are ignoring and could have leaned on).

Solid 7.5 outta 10. It was a political thriller with some superhero flavor added on.

Not seeing any comment about the Oscar nominees.

And having seen a few of them, I think it's pretty understandable. Some of the best picture nominees are horrible movies. It's as if a few of the studios are mocking the process with their nominees. Saw Anora a few weeks ago, and then The Substance just now- I really don't understand how either could have gotten a single nomination, they are so bad. What a waste of time seeing both of them. And while we thought Emilia Perez was interesting, I can see why a musical thriller is a questionable pick for best picture.

I guess I will not bother with the show when the time comes- I know the Dunes got a lot of accolades, but I didn't like both of them.

I liked the substance for what it was, and the word Oscar never popped into my head

You are insane re: Anora. It's great and one of the best acting performances I have seen in years. Srsly, that actress is brilliant, and the story is solid.

LOL.

The movie was basically Pretty Woman, but with nudity and sex. And the acting was 20 min of her being a stripper. 20 min being a hooker, and the rest thinking that she's actually Julia Roberts that the guy loves her, and is fighting everyone about it. Once you heard who the kid's dad was, the ending was already decided.

And maybe I could not appreciate her acting because I could not relate to a delusional hooker from wherever they were from.

The only interesting story was between her and the guard, which ended up being a tiny fraction of the story.

If that's all you saw then that's all you saw. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I saw a good actress managing several different roles in several different languages, and far from being cliche playing off the cliches in a masterful way.
