God I miss Candy. Was he drugs or fat? His SCTV work is the absolute gold standard for TV comedy. Nobody has come remotely close.

Bit of everything. Cocaine, alcohol, cigarettes, obese with a family history of heart issues, pretty much checked all the boxes for a heart attack at 43. Would have been 72 this Halloween.

Candy could do it all. He could do sweet, caustic, self-deprecating, straight man, knew now to nail a character without becoming a caricature, and just flat out made me laugh period.

I don't know if anyone's discussed and I can't be bothered to read back, even a little.

I saw the new Hellraiser last night. I liked it. Look, it's not a ... good movie. But none of them are. But it's at least as good as 3/4, if not as good as 1/2. Better than anything since 4. I didn't love the voice they used for new Pinhead* but the female portrayal was pretty cool.

*And this isn't fair to the actress or director. I always thought that Doug Bradley's voice was absolutely perfect for the character. Just the right amount of creepy, strong, evil, menacing, etc. But I don't know if that's fair to compare them.

edit: I really enjoy the right wing whining about this and the new Predator movies using female characters, and then judging the movies against "real" movies instead of the popcorn garbage they are. No shit they aren't as good as American Beauty. Do you think that's their goal? Stop being disingenuous and comparing them to movies outside the genre.

1 is a good movie. It's in the horror Pantheon.

My understanding is by the time you get to 3 they are just being farmed out to hacks to generate money off the franchise name, and none of the writing or directing talent is the same. 5 is actually also very good, but it did not need to be a Hellraiser movie, it could have been its own thing -- the Hellraiser connection is as much an afterthought as the third Cloverfield.

I have little recollection of the later movies except 4 has some excellent visuals of the design of the box, and the one with the Eastern European metro (7) has some legitimately good scenes. Otherwise, Jesus they are bad.

I would love to see them come back strong. Such a good idea and as 1 showed one of the few horror concepts that is not mutually exclusive from good characters and human motivations.

There were two consecutive movies in the line (5 and 6? or 6 and 7?) that were frantically made just to keep the rights for the series IP, and they took completely different scripts and just slapped in the Hellraiser IP. Mostly the series is awful, not even "good bad".

1 and 2 are awesome horror movies. 3 and 4 were fun but good bad. The rest (up until 2022)? Mostly crap with occasional fun stuff.

All the really long franchise (Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street) follow the Great Debut, Meh Sequel, Mostly Terrible Cash Dives formula.

I havent watched the new one yet...but I love all the outrage over the Pinhead change. Pinhead wasn't even supposed to be a big character originally (he is not the leader of the Cenobytes in the original story I believe the fat one is) but because of the prosthetics used for a couple of the others lines had to be shifted to him and the female. He also was never called Pinhead by Clive Barker it was a joke nickname by the crew behind the scenes that somehow became a thing with the fans as well. Doug Bradley kills though so it is not surprising that Pinhead was the character fans liked the most.

It is weird how much the story changes from 1-2 and then 2-3. Originally the Cenobytes are not really evil and they certainly aren't demons. They are basically travelers, searching all of the realms for every manner of pleasure. (in Barker's original story) In 2 they seem to be more emotional and untethered. By the time 3 comes around Pinhead might as well be the Antichrist...

I still like them though...I will watch the new one soon. Hopefully it is better than Prey was...I really hated that film. (and not cause of the female lead, she was the only good part of the film!)

I dunno...I am a bit gunshy after Halloween Kills was such a disappointment. (Halloween 2018 was awesome) Yet I will still be going Friday to see Halloween Ends and just hope it doesn't suck.

I don't recall how many Halloween movies there have been. After 2 they were were mostly terrible but I didn't hate a few of the more recent ones. I will watch the new one because and like Handy hope it doesn't suck.

I've always thought Pinhead could be the subject of his own rethinking of the franchise. He shows signs of philosophical sophistication and the backstory really just needed to be taken by a good writer and cared for. It's never too late. Look what they did with Johnny in Cobra Kai, from a 2-dimensional throw away villain in the movie to one of the most interesting and genuinely human characters in tv.

But I would like Pinhead to deserve it. Not to be a victim. One of the things about the Cenobytes early on was they were fair. They weren't chaotic, they were actually agents of order, it was just the order you find way out at the edge. Hellraiser is so good at exploding myths of morality and judgment, at its best. It is so deft at blending good and evil and pleasure and pain. It deserved better and I hope it gets it.

I never say this...

DO NOT SEE HALLOWEEN ENDS! IT IS A FUCKING TRAGEDY!

Blumhouse is a fucking crime against humanity. This is Ghostbusters 2016 bad.

Watched Blonde on Netflix. I think that the movie received an NC-17 rating because it sucked so much. However...........Ana de Armas was fantastic as Marilyn Monroe. At several points in the movie (especially when they showed the filming of Some Like It Hot), I completely believed that she actually was Marilyn.

From the GPL trivia thread:

There have been six movies with one-word titles beginning with the letter “C” that have won the Academy Award for “Best Picture.”

I could name four - the other two were out of my depths so to speak.
