Movies 52 - 1917: Sonic the Bad Boys of Prey

Lars and the real girl is on hbo this month. I forgot how good of a movie this is, fairly early in gosling career.

of course how could a Minnesota boy named Lars lindstrom with a life size girl doll named Bianca as his girlfriend not be charming?

I liked that movie.

I watched One Night in Miami last night. It's a fictional account of a gathering of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke. Regina King directed it. I thought it was really good. It's on Amazon Prime, in case anyone wants to check it out.

Wonderful premise; I'm going to check it out.
 
Paper Moon. Revisited a classic last night, and it was the first watch for the rest of the family. It was a treat watching them enjoy it as much as I remembered.
 
Annihilation

THe bear scene is up there with the most haunting and terrifying scenes I have ever watched. I even sort of knew it was coming, but wasn't prepared for how it played out. Pretty much everything after that was disturbing. Until the last five seconds. I wasn't a huge fan of the cliched, "Everything's fine.........OR IS IT?!?!?!?!? *CUT TO BLACK* I can't remember the last time I watched a movie and had it bother me as I was trying to fall asleep.

Beyond that, I'm not entirely sure if this was a great movie that's a deep meditation on humanity or just an above average sci-fi thriller. It really could be either. I think this, from the WIki, sums it up nicely:
The Economist described the film as "tightrope-walking the fine line between open-ended, mind-expanding mystery and lethargic, pretentious twaddle"

If they hadn't spent the first 2/3 of the movie playing stupid horror games, it would have been a lot better. Instead of the stupid crocodile scene, just cut to the flower deer and get the point across. Instead of Portman searching the jungle for what seemed like 15 minutes, they could have told what they needed to in 30 seconds.

It just felt like they had a couple of really well-developed sections of the plot, but couldn't figure out how to fill in the rest of the movie. If this were a short film, like 40-50 minutes, it could have been really good.
 
I have some of the same thoughts on Annihilation. A lot of potential and it was visually stunning, but it was self-indulgent to a fault and in the end fell flat. Not all that different in how I felt about Midnight Sky.

I Care a Lot. No idea why this seems to be the sleeper hit of late. I thought the editing was clunky, and I didn't buy Rosamund Pike nor really even Peter Dinklage's characters, although to their credit they both did ok with the given material. As a time killer I'll half-heartedly recommend, but don't bump anything down in your queue for it.

I saw it last night. My wife really got into it, but I thought most of it was pretty much by-the-numbers suspense movie. The only part that I didn't really expect was the Who at the end of the movie.

Yeah, my wife and I watched it last night as well. Got suckered in by the "#1 in U.S." ranking again.

Here is the thing. I thought it was a great premise. I just thought they worked too hard at making it a "dark comedy" and ended up missing the mark. I almost think it would have been better had they played it straight up.

Yup. VII is rehash of the original, more or less. There are a number of differences in the feel, IMO, but it's a fair cop to say it's a rehash. IIX is very different from every Star Wars movie that has come before it, and that upset everybody who wanted something completely from Star Wars...because most of them really wanted more of the same or it had to be different in the exact ways they expected it to be different.

Not to rehash a really dumb argument (that I have had too many times) but most of us didn't want the same thing, in fact we were excited that this could be something different. It was the choices that were made that upset us. Johnson took VII and basically threw it out...literally nothing that happens in VIII makes sense when lined up with VII. And they marginalized most of the decent characters for a couple of storylines that just never worked. (plus they completely destroyed everything cool about Rey) John Boyega served no purpose in the film, Kylo was a joke (that stupid love drama was cringy bad), the stupid casino planet was AOTC level awful and the end with "Luke" was just maddening. The OJ chase and the "lightspeed attack" were so hilariously dumb it was almost satirical. Hell some of the things happening honestly had me believing they didn't have a complete script. My problem wasn't that they tried something, it was that it totally didn't work. Good attempt but there is a reason it is as divisive a film as it is and it isn't just that a bunch of nerds wanted another Empire Strikes Back. ;^) (of which there are some vocal ones...but they would complain if they got that too they just want to complain)

I applaud Johnson for trying, I really do. (as do most fans I know) It didn't connect though and that was the problem. He would have been better off doing his own trilogy like the original plan. I can't argue any of what you said, and they already had a guy on the Star Wars staff who could've given them a solid trilogy, but he was the Exec. Producer and show runner for their Star Wars: Rebels cartoon. He could've delivered a Star Wars feel and story arc that kept with what had been the established mythology of the universe. Hire whichever directors and writers you want, but like Feige at Marvel, have that one person, or small group of people, who've provided the outlines.
 
Mookie just finished up the taken trilogy!

nice way to waste 6 hrs.... and fitting that they close it up by “jumping the shark” with mills taking stewart’s jet out by ramming a Porsche into it during lift off :^)

surprisingly 2 is the tightest with the time spent in the conflict. However having the daughter hurl grenades out into the city is a bit whacked!
