Perfect Sisters

Based on a true story (the real-life characters were minors, so obviously some stuff had to be created, due to privacy laws) about 2 daughters that staged the "accidental" death of their alcoholic mother. It came across as a higher quality Lifetime movie (and I found out afterwards, it WAS to be a TV movie in the beginning). Some parts were really good, but overall it was meh. Mira Sorvino's performance was about the only thing that really saved it.

The Aviator:
I feel shame that I hadn't seen this before, being a Scorcese movie. Leo was great, of course. His mannerisms were impeccable.

I liked this movie a lot, and I typically can't stand Scorcese. The scene of him and Cate Blanchette as Katherine Hepburn was quite good.

I know Cate was basically mirroring Kate (read that she watched all her movies and such to get her character down)....man, Kate would make me stabby in about 3 minutes.

I quite agree. KH is a murder-suicide waiting to happen. The thing I liked in that scene was Hughes' impatience with the ethereal distance of the moneyed Main Line Hepburn family, and likewise their difficulty in dealing with him. It was a tiny little scene, but it captured what taking at cross purposes feels like.

Judged and dismissed in one fell swoop. When he flipped that switch...beautiful.

Ant-Man

Fun movie. It simultaneously had the feel of a Marvel movie and yet didn't feel like one all at the same time. Small references well placed made for some good laughs, as usual, but there was more of a willingness to cast the hero as a morally immoral man, different in nature from Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, though. I really like Luis's recaps of how he came across information because we all know at least one person like that. :)

So, I finally got around to seeing Star Trek Into Darkness the other day. There are certainly some good points and some bad, but one highlight of the reboot series for me so far has been how Karl Urban nails DeForest Kelley's speech patterns.

On the other hand, while I love John Cho, I feel like he's basically playing John Cho in space here.

Trainwreck.

Amy Schumer was awesome. Bill Hader impressive as well. Laughed quite a bit.

Solid B+.

The Barber:

Using the imdb recap, because the Netflix recap is grossly misleading: A barber comes into contact with two men fixated on what triggers evil. A father, whose life is destroyed in pursuit of a killer, and a son who is trying to prevent his father's obsession.

Great twisted movie. Stone cold at times. Total mind games. Some cliches, and foreshadowing, sure, but well done. Def recommend.

Words And Pictures

Besides the romantic subplot tripe it spews forward, and is painfully obvious how it's going to end, the main plot about what is more important is excellent: words, or pictures? Literature, language, etc...or paintings, photographs, etc? Loved the main plot part, knew the subplot was going to be cliched beyond belief, so it didn't ruin the movie as much as I thought it would.

And Clive Owen is pretty awesome to begin with. Juliette Binoche (sp?) did a great job, also, as the cold-hearted/stoic bit**.

Yoda was a Sith lord, no Jedi Master was he!

Episode V: Yoda says, "Do or do not, there is no try."
Episode III: Obi-wan says, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes!" (Which is, in and of itself, an absolutism.)

Either that, or George Lucas was really mailing it all in for a paycheck during the prequels. ;)

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I saw "Phoenix" in it's opening this week. A terrific melodrama, and a really good movie. It's in German with english sub titles. I'd go again for sure. Got great reviews.
I saw train wreck and it did have quite a few laughs, but... meh that was it.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

TCM has been doing Sunday Silents, and the most recent was Spione (German for Spies), one of Fritz Lang's last silent films. If you like the genre, you would love it -- great camera work, wonderfully over-the-top expressionistic acting, and of course Lang's maniac eye for detail and subtlety. It's also something silents often and German silents very often are not: a really fun story. Basically a spy thriller, with some evil geniuse Mabuse-like touches and surprisingly deep character development of the main figures. B+

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

The Caine Mutiny. It was quite good. I thought the ending was terrific and even fell in line with my analysis of the accusers as it was happening. However, it reinforced my long held belief that great films from the classic era are not any different, more untouchable, more redeeming, original etc., than quality films being made today. I'm not saying it was a dime a dozen film but..

That said l loved Ferrer, MacMurry,, Johnson and in this quote Bogie, "There's the right way, the wrong way, the Navy way, and my way—and if you do things my way, we'll get along!".

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

The courtroom scenes and the final scene from Caine Mutiny are outstanding. Moreso because to that point it really is just a throw-away melodrama set on a boat. But the last half hour... yikes.
