Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Also, I'm watching Glory right now. The final assault scene is about to begin. Such a good movie. Strong acting, good story, it makes for a true tribute to the Mass. 54th.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Did you guys actually watch the show or basing your reactions upon its reputation? It lasted 7 seasons, just like DS9 and TNG. I'm not blown away by what I've seen, but it mustn't have been so bad to last that long. I'll find out as I go along, though. Should the show get continuously bad, it's easy enough to dump from my watch list.

You called it STAR WARS VOYAGEUR...that is how you failed. (its Star Trek and it is spelled Voyager) I loved Voyager. Year of Hell is an amazing two part episode. The ending is abrupt though fyi...

I just watched The Kingsmen...*** was that piece of crap? Here is an idea, how about instead of paying millions for an amazing cast you actually spend money on a script that doesnt blow goats. Seriously, I would have walked out if I saw it in theaters.

You're doing it wrong. I had my doubts going in. And I was pleasantly surprised. It was just over the top fun. As I mentioned earlier, it was redonkulous fun.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

New trailer for the yet another dark knight returns rehash I mean Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice and it looks even more full of grimderp awful than the first.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

What's the backstory behind these two coming to blows and how/when/where does it fit with the Justice League?

Meh, I was tired, Trek vs. Wars was just a matter of the fingers being on autopilot. As to the Voyager/Voyageur, listening to yet another Brit accent on the show probably had me thinking of people who spell things the wrong way.

Star Trek Wars - When Star Trek fandom evolved into a religion and took over most of the world's countries before Star Trek was banned and Trekkies executed
Star Wars Trek - the vast migration of Star Wars fans

I wasnt expecting much, and I got even less. It was stupid and not in the good way. Glad you enjoyed it but I want my two hours back.

I was expecting a disjointed "ooo super neat comic book action move" and a story that only a comic book geek could love. While the former was true (and I admit, it was awesome), the latter I was wrong on.

No one knows for sure (security is tight) but from what has been gleaned it looks like it is a reaction to the ending of Man of Steel. The trailer makes it pretty clear that in the Zod fight it is Wayne Towers that is destroyed and Batman fears Superman and his power. Superman feels Batman is a power hungry vigilante and no one knows what Wonder Woman's motivations are. By the end though the conflict must be resolved though as Justice League is coming in 2 years.

People dont even know who the other villain is in he film besides Lex that is how crazy security has been.

"Grimdark" is one of the lamest and laziest criticisms to date and I see it everywhere for stuff. A world where Batman exists is going to be dark otherwise there is no point to it. (this isnt the 1960s) Same holds true for Daredevil and people seem to love that show despite its "grimdarkness". Grimdark is turning into the new "derivative" or "Jump the Shark" where people just say it cause they dont like something. (not attacking you foxton just an observation)

I am a comic book geek, I hated every second of that movie. There ws plenty that could have worked but they never fleshed out any of the storylines. It was like 15 different small bios put together with with bunch of people dying in cartoony ways. I would rather watch Looney Tunes or the Muppets.

I was just giving you crap :) And they spend time exploring the Quadrant because they are looking to form alliances and find faster routes home. They have 80 years to kill ;) How far in are you?

I just started season 2, they found the cryostatis humans abducted back in 1937. Something tells me we're going to see the abductors later in the season. When I wrote last night, season 1 had just ended.

Stopping for supplies or receiving a distress call, that all makes sense, but some of the decisions they're making are simply capricious. Having to find tech that's both able to speed them along and is compatible with their systems is like searching a square mile of haystacks and in it you can find a single carton of needles, but only one of them is blue, and only a blue needle will get them what they need.

Kind of like "Kick-Ass"? ;)

No. Going dark places isn't the same as grimdark. Grimdark is in reference to the over reliance on dark and gritty imagery and story to the exclusion of everything else. It's being dark and oppressive just because without any levity or room to breath. It's a misguided attempt to make superheroes more 'adult'.

As for Batman, he may exist in a dark world, it doesn't define everything else around him, and certainly shouldn't be his only attribute. But it's become expected since he dominates everything even though two of the three superheroes do not live in some depressing perpetual night. Also, screw the idea that everything that ever deals with Batman has to be like Nolan, Burton, or Miller's stuff. Especially the latter two. Batman isn't about just beating up bad guys and growling about justice from the shadows while he goes to the same extremes as the psychotics he fights. Frank Miller and the cult of batman that grew from his work is the worst thing that ever happened to the character and comics in general.

Marvel movies by comparison to DC has mostly figured out how to create a balance of dark/serious without needing a grimdark atmosphere

I didnt see Kick *** for that exact reason actually...

Clown,

When the Borg show up it gets really really good. (until the end) As for the missions that make little sense, I always just figured Janeway (and Chikotah) figured the best way to pass the time and keep morale up was to become the Lewis and Clark of the 25th Century. This was a Qudarant that had not really been explored by the Federation so everything was new.

Marvel movies are their own beast...they have their template and it works for them. Each studio needs to do things their own way or it gets stale. (DC tried to make their universe that way when they did Green Lantern and it didnt fly) The X-Men movies arent the same as Marvel either and Age of Apocalypse is going to be uber dark but they work. The new Fantastic Four is nothing like Marvel films either and as I said Daredevil is made by Marvel Studios and it is no different than any Batman film imho. (which is why people love it)

As I have said quite a few times we are getting a glut of these movies the next 5 years or so (like 30 big budget cbms) and the only way it wont collapse under its own weight is to have different approaches. WB wants to have their world darker because they consider their heroes a pantheon of Gods fighting to protect the world. They want consequences that matter. Marvel wants it to be more lighthearted and make sure everyone knows everything is ok. Fox just runs with he themes of X-Men...etc.

As for Batman what would you do? Campy wont work as has been shown. The only other type of Batman that has existed is the Neal Adams template (true detective style Batman) which I am not sure really will work in a movie. (though Affleck signed t write/direct a Batman solo and I feel he may go this way) While I agree that Frank Miller was terrible (I hate the Dark Knight Returns) the fact is Miller is why Batman is the money machine he is now. The Batgod is the #1 character in the world across almost any medium. (his comics outsell most others, his games are huge sellers, his cartoons are always running and his last movie franchise made $3 billion with zero crossovers) We may not like it but the vast, vast, vast, vast majority of people like that. The tragic kid who becomes a demigod who stands up to supernatural and universal forces he has no control of appeals to people on a primal level. The fact that despite being a member of the JLA he distrusts them all and would kill them if needed (like in Tower of Babel) appeals to the cynic in everyone. His rogues like the Joker are beloved not just cause of their look, but because they are true archetypes of evil...and are dark side versions of Batman himself. People today want his world dark...our mileage obviously does vary.

As for this movie, while it starts dark it will end differently. It is called Dawn of Justice for a reason. It is always darkest just before the dawn...the universe isnt going to be like The Avengers where everyone is cracking one liners like Iron Man does but it isnt going to be like the Nolanverse either where everyone is miserable and the heroes are hard to define either. Whether it works or not chances are the movies will make booku bucks especially overseas and lets be honest. that is all that matters. Personally I like it but I understand those that dont.
