Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

As for the modern oaters, my benchmark is Silverado. Love this reviewer's comment on Rotten Tomatoes:

Rotten Tomatoes said:
It's like a colossal buffet: You take what you want and leave the rest, readily forgiving the worst of it because the best just tastes so good.

; said:
You've never seen Silverado? Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, Scott Glenn, and a young Kevin Costner, who was given the part by Kasden to make up for having his scenes cut out of The Big Chill, and then supporting roles by John Cleese, James Gammon, Brian Dennehy, Jeff Fahey and more. It probably is, more than any other film, responsible for the rebirth of the western in modern cinema.

Finally got to see this since its on Encore OnDemand. I think the Rotten Tomatoes review was perfect for this movie, it certainly was enjoyable at times, but not in others, but the enjoyment outweighted the bad for sure.

My wife had an interesting reaction to me wanting to watch it..."since when do you like westerns"

I gotta get around to buying that one of these days.

Yeah, her single line of "Yes, Your Highness" could've been spiced up so much more. She could've stood out by playing the one character in the movie with emotions. :p

Acting is more than dialogue, you know. ;)

Speaking of Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch, just watched The Imitation Game.

Thought it was very good. Strong, interesting, well-filmed and acted story about the man who was a driving force in breaking the German code during WWII. Unlike a few of you, I thought Knightly was strong--better than Arquette in Boyhood; and, Cumberbatch is every bit as good in his role as Turing as Eddie Redmayne was in The Theory Of Everything.

I recently watched several early David Lean movies and one of the actresses was Celia Johnson. Johnson and Knightley look somewhat similar and I'd like to see a modern remake of Brief Encounter with Knightley.

I do want to see The Imitation Game. It's coming up on my queue.

Saw "Restrepo" and "Korengal" which are documentaries on the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan. Highly recommend. Journalists were embedded with the group. Some great and horrific footage in these.

Looks like there was a remake of Brief Encounter (1974) with Richard Burton & Sophia Loren.

And for the German picture category...um "Downfall" anyone?! That should be a top 5 foreign movie no matter what country it's from.

Josie and the Pussycats is actually a fun little movie. And yeah, it's loads better than The Brady Bunch movies.

And yes, Gallipoli is better than Braveheart.

I was ok with 16. “Best Picture” Oscar Winners (1960–2008): American Beauty (1999)| The Apartment (1960) although I would personally replace American Beauty with Out Of Africa. 41. Movie about amoral businessmen: Wall Street | Boiler Room. Boiler Room was very meh the 2nd time I watched it. 39. John Hughes film: Planes, Trains & Automobiles | Some Kind of Wonderful. I demand a recount right fu###ng now. 35. Denzel Washington movie: Mississippi Masala | The Mighty Quinn. Replace TMQ with Fallen. 27. Incoherent movie about a hippie: Easy Rider | The Big Lebowski. By what definition is TBL underrated? It seems to,be universally loved by anyone that can tolerate John Goodman.
