Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Had to google, I'd never heard of her. You're right -- she looks like an adult human female, unlike almost every other current anorexic starlet.

She was Shawn's girlfriend on Psych.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

The Coen Brothers are the movie version of one of your posts. Way overdone and longer than need be. :p

This likely explains why I enjoy them. :)

The other possibility here is that not every movie (or post) is for everybody.

Flame And Citron:

Danish Resistance during WWII who went after Danish collaborators and Nazi officers. Based on fact. Made it through about the first third of the movie, and shut 'er down. Didn't hold my attention, wasn't shot very well (cliched camera zoom-in during a key line or key facial expression; rookie sh*, IMO), and just wasn't that interesting. Don't bother with this one.

I don't even remember watching PCU mustbhave been awesome. Fargo was top notch, Raising Arizona was incredible, Burn After Reading was not very good at all.

What makes PCU great, is that in hindsight, it was way ahead of its time, in relation to the "message" of the plot. Much like Natural Born Killers/contemporary media. Yes, I know PCU is a silly little comedy, but my point stands. :)

This is a great example of differing perspectives. I remember watching PCU (and liking it) and thinking, "people are still whining about this?" The PC battle had been fought out on campuses from 1975-1985. The second wave feminism battles were fought ever earlier. All those issues had become hoary cliches by the time that movie came out. It was liking watching a movie released in 1990 talking about the hot button issue of desegregation.

It was a funny movie, but as far as messaging went it was literally decades out of date.

No, it wasn't out of date. Those same debates were raging while I was on campus during the late 90's, and likely continued long after I graduated. The only things that are dated in the movie is magnificent early 90's fashion and hoard of students in the computer lab (individual laptops and all these days).

Well, you were there so I won't argue. I can only say when I saw it it was ground already burned over for me, but I suppose these things move in waves across both the country and different people.

And even now, with "people first" language.

In the 90s, words like "queer," "fag," "retarded," and "handicapped" were generally not frowned upon when used in everyday language. Now? You better get a PR person and or a lawyer, depending on who you are.

And funny: the "r" word was starred out, but not the others. And the "r" word has other legitimate definitions.

The q and f words in your sentence haven't been acceptable in everyday language since the 70s, anywhere I've ever lived. Basically, if you used the f word you were showing yourself to be an idiot or a third grader, and if you used the q word you were trying to start a fight. It's possible this is a regional difference but at least for the f word I really, really doubt it.

The r word was a putdown but people used it.

The h word is, AFAIK, still an acceptable word in everyday conversation. In a business setting, you might need to lawyer up.

Dr. Mrs. Kepler has a great story about where she works now, the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties division of DHS. She sent an email for an all-hands meeting and it was returned with a complaint. I told her, "I guess that about wraps it up for stand-up meetings too..."

The playground game now generally known as "Smear The Quarterback" was not called that (in general) at LEAST until the early 90's. There was a different Q word used. Just sayin'.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

We were still calling it s the q in the early 80s for sure and were calling each other fags through the 90s.

Whatever. Times change.

And for the better I would add.

Using those words now only illustrates one's ignorance.

Mid 90s at least. I know we used it when I was a kid.

Very true.

Oh, if you're saying what did little boys use on the playground, then I'm sure they still use f, q, not to mention n and all sorts of charming terms. Little boys are demons.

Q of course has been absorbed and is now the academic word of choice. (The first time I saw a journal using the term "Queer Studies," probably around 1982, I did a triple take.) F is still shorthand for "I grew up in a trailer park."
