I never understood people's obsession with Fight Club. I saw it once, enjoyed it and never thought twice about it after.

When it first came out, I had no interest in it. I think I came away from the trailer/word of mouth thinking it was a totally different movie than it actually is. So I think my low bar of expectation helped the end result of me liking it.

Watched "Once Upon A Time In America" (De Niro, Woods). Netflix has the full 3:45 version. The first half hour dragged, as Sergio Leone loves showing off his long long long shots. Once it got going, though, it was darn good. Really liked it.

I had no interest in it at all, but this guy I live with is really into violence and kind of changed my thinking.

For me it's Usual Suspects. Not only is that movie a waste of time, but Kevin Spacey plays the same character in everything he does except one time he adds a limp and suddenly ZOMG!! The only redeeming part of the movie were a few scenes with Gabriel Byrne and Benicio Del Toro. Even Chazz Palminteri went one-trick-pony on the bit.

My wife and I watched Birdman last night. I really liked it, she just says that it was very weird, which it was. But I could tell that she was hooked. She was glued to the TV, and not playing on her phone or anything like that. (Usually this is the best way to tell if she likes what we're watching) :p

I really liked the way it was shot. I've never seen anything like it before, and I'm very surprised that it worked. It really did work great. Michael Keaton was awesome, as advertised, and the supporting actors/actresses were very good as well.

One thing I have learned in my 37 thousand years on the planet is to take your inspirations where you can find them and try to leave other people to theirs. There are people out there in the world who thought The Departed was something more than a steaming turd and The Dark Knight was more than an adequate teenager's wish fulfillment. That used to bug me, and I used to explain why they were wrong. But that's as idiotic as people who don't relate to the more interesting things hidden in some of the movies I like trying to diminish my enjoyment of those movies.

Since all aesthetics is completely subjective, regardless of what Aristotle and Harold Bloom think, by definition spending time ripping on a bad movie is wasted breath. Either everybody hates it and congrats, so do you, or somebody found something in it to like and you missed that.

For me that movie is Freejack. My friends and I went to a midnight showing in Boston, possibly wasted, assuming it was going to be the worst movie ever made -- a solid F. But it turns out it's a D with aspirations towards C minus. I think I may have never enjoyed a movie evening more. Although, again, there may have been other reasons for that.

Fight Club was also the second-most misleadingly advertised movie ever, after The Village. The former turned into a huge cult hit; the latter I guess not so much, though it ought to be.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Freejack ruled in the same that The Last Boy Scout ruled. Neither is a great movie for any other reason than I enjoy every minute of it every time I watch it.

My daughter is watching Frozen again. There's a twisted part of me that wants to end the movie right when Anna turns to ice and you hear Elsa weeping while everyone watches aghast. Just fade to black and a somber "Let It Go" right before Anna starts to thaw.

Probably a sign that I should start getting her to watch other movies.

It's not even that I dislike Frozen, or think it's not a really good kids movie. I've just seen it too ****ed much.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I loved Frozen, but I've loved almost every Disney princess movie.

Identity (John Cusack, Ray Liotta) was also VERY misleading. I loved it. It is NOT your standard slasher movie as one would think after seeing promos for it.

Miurder in the First. By far my favorite movie that no one else seems to remember or like.

I don't remember how Identity was pimped. I loved it.
