Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Just watched Gone Girl.

Holy. Mind. Fu**.

But not in the twist endings like The Departed. As in the complete psychotic games that both characters played. Very David Fincher.

Also... it may not have been wise to watch this one with the wife. :p Credits start and she looked at me and said "you know, I do watch a lot of crime shows. CSI, NCIS..."

I agree. That movie...wow. Again, NOT what I expected with an A-List Hollywood blockbuster. That just helped make the movie a little better.

My wife and I both loved that movie. Yeah, it was messed up in a psychological way, but it was very entertaining, and kept us engaged completely throughout the movie.

Sunset Blvd.

Solid movie. The emoting by the lead actress, on purpose for the movie or not, bugged me. Greatly. But looking past that, excellent movie and story. Great classic movie.

It was on purpose, and it's supposed to make you uncomfortable, like the monkey. If Holden, Swanson and Wilder did nothing else in their careers, that would have put them in the HoF. A very tough watch, but everything a movie can be.

In my top 5. No question. The emoting of the lead actress is the central theme of the film. Wilder is my second favorite director. Almost everything he did is magic.

Between 1939 and 1959 he wrote either the original or the screenplay for Ninotchka, Ball of Fire, Double Indemnity, the Lost Weekend, A Foreign Affair, Sunset Blvd, Stalag 17, Sabrina, Witness for the Prosecution, and Some Like it Hot. The breadth among those works is insane.

Welles or Kubrick?

I'd just put up a half dozen and tie them for first place: those three plus Hawks, Huston, and Lang.

Hitchcock. Welles and Kubrick are in the mix though. Then it's probably Woody.

I'm getting more respect for Woody the more I see of his lesser known stuff. Shadows and Fog is a masterpiece -- I think it's the smartest of his movies except for maybe Love and Death.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

It was her mouth movements that drove me crazy. Her dialogue, and the emoting behind it, I liked. I REALLY liked the voice-over narration. Dam good writing there.

She should have won best actress that year. The reason she didn't is because the film was a "rip" on the industry and actors/actresses in general from the Silent era. Then Bette Davis should have won for "All About Eve" another film you should probably check out but her co-star Anne Baxter refused to be listed as a supporting actress so their vote was split. The award was given to Judy Holliday.

1950 Best Actress nominees.
Judy Holliday – Born Yesterday
Anne Baxter – All About Eve
Bette Davis – All About Eve
Eleanor Parker – Caged
Gloria Swanson – Sunset Boulevard

I disagree -- Baxter should have won that year. Her performance is more interesting than Davis' (to be fair, her character has more depth). Davis and Swanson are both chewing scenery (though delightfully).

However, Holden losing to Crawford for best actor was a crime.

Edit: it's 1951. Crawford won in 1950 for All the King's Men (he was the gangster in Born Yesterday in 1951 but not nominated). Ferrer won in 1951 for Cyrano -- I can see that.

George Sanders won best supporting for All About Eve, which was entirely deserved. That is a great written part (though basically the whole script is a masterpiece).

I'm not sure the theory that Sunset Blvd lost best picture because of politics is correct -- it won best screenplay which is a pretty strong endorsement.

Interesting. I do still think Swanson should have won but I find your take on Baxter interesting. Baxter would have won supporting actress and Bette would have been given best actress if Baxter hadn't insisted on being in the Best Actress category though. Just goes to show that the Oscars are mostly political and getting nominated is where it's really at.

Yeah, the Oscars were held in 51 but the performances were from 1950. Depends on how you want to date it I suppose.
