Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Maybe so I guess. :p

Birdman - loved this one although it bordered on falling prey to the Hollywood chicanery it was calling to task - pretentiousness and self-absorption. Despite that it was a good story, and while some scenes did drag on a bit Keaton, Stone and Norton were excellent.

I liked Birdman. Had no clue what I'd think of it going in; seemed like they couldn't do a full movie with that plotline. Glad I was wrong.

Jack Strong:

Based on a true story during the Cold War where a high-ranking Polish officer fed USSR secrets to the US. He wasn't really a spy, he was more of an "ally" (as a line in the movie explains). I give it a bit more of a higher rating due to it being true, but it's your standard spy thriller overall. Worth a watch if you're into that sort of thing.

The Propaganda Game

Documentary on North Korea. A Spanish film-maker gets access to make a video diary of life in North Korea. Lots of spin both ways, and I thought it was really balanced for a documentary. Of course, the really bad stuff was probably censored by the North Korea government (video footage of the poor areas, etc), and that is to be expected by any country with a government like that. Very interesting to hear everyday citizens' responses to the questions and such.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Went to Star Wars last night with family--wife and two twenty somethings. I find it easy to let movies take me where they want to go, but that was pure disappointment. Great special effects but a zero-imagination story line. Switch a few spots on the stage, modify (only slightly) a few outfits, and run the same script. One daughter had to nudge me awake twice. Never done that in a theater.

You can't go home again

'spies like us' is on. so stupid it's perfect. :D

- Did you hear that?
-- Yeah. It's a dickfer.
- What's a dickfer?
-- To pee with.

H... hair... hairbrush... headrest...
Jesus, where did you learn your Russian? JCPenney?

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

The trailer for the new Point Break looks like it'll have even worse acting than Keanu's for the Johnny Utah role.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I managed to convince the wife to watch Ant-man by also renting Tomorrowland.
She ended up loving Ant-man and we both felt confused by the direction of Tomorrowland.
I didn't mind tomorrowland but it was not at all what I expected, and the ending just seemed off.

Watched Sicario last night. Not bad. A little confusing. Just watched Joy. Liked it a lot. I know it's based on a true story, just wondering how much it happened the way it wa depicted.

Beasts Of No Nation:

Brutal (actually brutal, not in quality) of a young boy's role in the conflict of an un-named African nation. Doesn't really pull any punches at all. Very well done, and recommend.

Precious:

This is a delightful inspirational movie that.....wait, no it's not. The inspiration is dwarfed by the horrific nature of the environment in which it's about. Not quite a movie that "is great, but I'll never want to watch again" but it's close. Powerful. Moving. Hits all the buttons. I knew quite a few people who matched up with Precious' classmates' personalities in her alternative school (classmates who were at my school, before they "transferred").

I cannot recommend this movie enough, but man, it's really really heavy. Be prepared.

Went to see, " Janis, little girl Blue", about the late Janis Joplin. Really quite good documentary. in limited release, but worth going to. Especially if you are old like me.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Still continuing my Criterion Collection marathon. Up to the 1960s. Currently in 1965.

Thought I'd post what I watch daily rather than posting long monthly lists.

Instead of watching a lot of football today, I watched two very good films:

Kwaidan, literally “ghost stories”, Masaki Kobayashi (1965)

--Four separate, evocative, colorfully filmed strange tales of odd circumstances and happenings.

The Shop on Main Street, Ján Kadá & Elmar Klos (1965)

--Czech film set during the Nazi occupation. A down and out carpenter tries to deal with the fascist elements that are taking over his town, while trying to understand the old Jewish widow whose shop he has become manager of. A comic-tragedy. Won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1965.

Palio: fast-paced, humorous, fascinating documentary about the horse race (and skulduggery) in Siena, Italy. Beautiful job -- A+ all the way. I believe the woman who directed also had a hand in Senna, which was also an A+.

Into cold war spy movies? How about indie foreign films?

Jack Strong is an excellent Polish Netflix movie set in the cold war. Great movie if you like suspense...warning a fair amount of subtitles included.

Funny. I'd like to see more recommendations here for Netflix movies.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I took it as him meaning that he wants Netflix original movies.

Ah....

Haven't seen too many of those. Getting into the orig series though. Just started Making Of A Murderer...it is intriguing so far....
