Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I haven't seen it yet, but my understanding is that it's essentially The Thing set in a western format, as done by Tarantino. Depending how faithful he wanted to remain to the original, the resolution kinda had to go a certain way.

I was ok with the individual outcomes. What I had a problem with I cant really explain without giving away most of the movie. So it will have to wait until the statute of limitations on spoilers expires. :)

I never thought of it as The Thing. I guess i can see some similarity.

So, you like going through life pi**ed off, eh?

I dont like to forget...that way when someone comes in telling us how regulations on banks are bad I dont fall for the trap ;)

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I must say I was surprised, though: our showing was sold out, and this was not at an art theater, but at our run of the mill first release commercial theater.

Is a movie with Pitt, Bale, Gosling, Carell and Tomei among others bound for the artsy place? Although I've only seen one ad for it here so perhaps I'm not giving it enough non-mainstream credit.

Kid Cannabis:

HS dropout ends up running a multi-million dollar pot business, importing from Canada and selling it here. Based on true story. I remember the source this was based on, which was a great story. Worth a watch; not something you're going to be zoned in on, but better than an afternoon-killer....

Red Beard, Akira Kurosawa (1965)

Great story of a young doctor in 19th-century Japan under the charge of an older doctor, Red Beard (Toshiro Mifune). Entwined within the film are interrelated stories of death and healing that help the younger doctor to grow and come to an understanding of himself and the people around him all under the tutelage of the Mifune character. Moving and edifying.

Mifune's last role with Kurosawa.

Heckler:

Doc on hecklers (and a little on critics) and the roles they play in entertainment. It's okay, obviously skewed against hecklers, but it does bring to light the viewpoints on the practice itself and how it's changed with the advent of the internet/etc.

Jamie Kennedy does not come off well in this movie, despite him producing it. A bit of a whiner; can't handle criticism. Some of his complaints are justified, some are definitely not.

Story of a Prostitute or Shunpuden; Seijun Suzuki (1965)

The English translation of the title, from what I can tell, doesn't really translate well from the Japanese.

Set in 1937 during the second Sino-Japanese War, it's not so much the story of a "comfort woman", Harumi, but a love story of between her and a subordinate officer, Mikami. Focus is largely on and challenges the hypocrisy and illegitimacy of Japanese codes of military and fraternal honor during wartime.

Simon of the Desert or Simón del desierto; Luis Buñuel (1965)

From fighting the devil in the desert to a modern discotheque, this film is a satire on religious conviction.

It's more than that. A really interesting treatment of several themes.

Rhymes For Young Ghouls:

Started off as a very interesting story about life on the Rez (fictional), then kind of lost its way. It's still an okay watch, but could have been much better.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Since I don't have Netflix anymore (can't outside the U.S.) I've lost my source of recommendations for independent and foreign films. I often used the "you might like" feature and it often worked. Does anyone know of an online source where you could input your likes and find recommendations? I really enjoyed The Three Colors Trilogy, Boyhood, Imitation Game, Funny Games, The Hunt, Buzzard, Animal Kingdom, The Kite Runner, La Cara Oculta (The Hidden Face). That's such a minor sampling but I can't access my old account to review my viewing history.

I guess you can try and look up the movies I post here. Lately they've been foreign/indie movies. I don't know of any source, since I've never had the need....Rotten Tomatoes or something? Do they have subject/type filters?

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I could actually use this as a source as you just said but figured I'd ask if anyone knew of anything online. I will also dig around myself but wanted to start here.

btw I am about to watch the Diving Bell and the Butterfly which is one I remember having in queue but never got around to.

IMDB has an "also suggested" or something like that for each title.

Can't you trick it with a VPN?

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Sadly no. Nor Pandora or ESPN either. However I have no problem logging into BTN. Logged into the VPN right now and this is what I get when trying to access Pandora:

Dear Pandora Visitor,

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

We believe that you are in Philippines
