Netflix in general. Don't come here that often...will now.
The Big Short: Excellent telling of the 07 mortgage bond crisis, how and why it happened, from the perspective of a few people who figured it out and then figured out how to profit from it. Very well done, and quite clear and insightful in the way Michael Lewis' work generally is. SOlid A. Steve Carell was far better than I expected in a dramatic role.
Steve Carell has had a few supporting roles where he plays a non-comedic character, like in The Way, Way Back, where he's done pretty well. The problem for him is that his comedic roles often become just different settings for his single character.
The Propoganda Game
Documentary on Netflix about North Korea. Directed by a Spaniard who's done some other documentaries about communist states and dictatorship. One of the main characters is another Spaniard who is the only foreigner working for the NKorea government. Also includes various interviews from folks on the street and of course the regular interviews with scholars and journalists.
Documentary on North Korea. A Spanish film-maker gets access to make a video diary of life in North Korea. Lots of spin both ways, and I thought it was really balanced for a documentary. Of course, the really bad stuff was probably censored by the North Korea government (video footage of the poor areas, etc), and that is to be expected by any country with a government like that. Very interesting to hear everyday citizens' responses to the questions and such.
It's decent:
I liked it. You could tell all the government workers know what BS they peddle. Citizens varied between what sounded like a reluctant scripted answer, what appears to be an actual belief in the system, and silence because they knew what happens if they say what they think. What struck me was the lack of people, anywhere.
The Big Short.
Loved the book. Love the movie. Hate what happened.
Juliet of the Spirits, Federico Fellini (1965)
--crazy, mystical madness of a woman trapped in an uncertain marriage.
I hope everybody in the country sees the movie. But judging from the demographic of the people in the theater when I saw, it is just preaching to the choir.
I must say I was surprised, though: our showing was sold out, and this was not at an art theater, but at our run of the mill first release commercial theater. Or to put it another way, Daddy's Home was also sold out.
I have seen the HBO movie Too Big To Fail a dozen times and each time it makes me mad. Cant wait to see The Big Short...

Saw The Hateful Eight.
Entertaining, but a lazy resolution. Must have ran out of ideas.
