Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show
I liked Birdman. Had no clue what I'd think of it going in; seemed like they couldn't do a full movie with that plotline. Glad I was wrong.
Jack Strong:
Based on a true story during the Cold War where a high-ranking Polish officer fed USSR secrets to the US. He wasn't really a spy, he was more of an "ally" (as a line in the movie explains). I give it a bit more of a higher rating due to it being true, but it's your standard spy thriller overall. Worth a watch if you're into that sort of thing.
The Propaganda Game
Documentary on North Korea. A Spanish film-maker gets access to make a video diary of life in North Korea. Lots of spin both ways, and I thought it was really balanced for a documentary. Of course, the really bad stuff was probably censored by the North Korea government (video footage of the poor areas, etc), and that is to be expected by any country with a government like that. Very interesting to hear everyday citizens' responses to the questions and such.
Maybe so I guess.
Birdman - loved this one although it bordered on falling prey to the Hollywood chicanery it was calling to task - pretentiousness and self-absorption. Despite that it was a good story, and while some scenes did drag on a bit Keaton, Stone and Norton were excellent.
