Watch NDT's 'talk-show' on Nat Geo and then reconsider the rant. :)

I didn't realize he was just doing a bit. I was taking Slate's word for it that he's an idiot.
In my opinion, if a fantasy movie can't ignore a few physical laws, what good is it as fantasy?

The Odd Couple:
Meh. Just meh. Couldn't really get into it. I got what they were going for, it just didn't really entertain me.

Rob The Mob:

Based on a true story about a Bonnie/Clyde couple who robbed gun-free mafia social clubs in NYC during the early 90s. Didn't find much on imdb/wiki to see how much was dramatized, but it's an interesting story (and the whole "is it really a crime to rob criminals" moral dilemma). I thought the movie was very much worth a watch, and will probably track down a factual book about the events.

IIRC, History Channel did a show a few years ago on the technology of Star Wars. One thing they mentioned is that in this life, the Death Star wouldn't have been able to produce enough energy to blow Alderaan up.

That's only because we don't have any kiber crystals, like they do in a galaxy far, far away.

io9 did an economic analysis of how much it would have cost to produce the Death Star. They concluded it would probably have been enough to bankrupt the galactic empire.

Palpatine: [on the phone with Darth Vader] Vader! How's my favorite Sith?... Whoa whoa whoa... whoa, whoa. Just - slow down. Huh? What do you mean they blew up the Death Star? ****! Oh, ****! ****! ****!... Who's "they"?... What the hell is an Aluminum Falcon?

[sighs]

Palpatine: OK, OK, so who's left?... Are you ****ting me?... Well, where are you?... Wait a sec, you've been flying around for two weeks trying to get a signal?... Oh, you must smell like... feet wrapped in leathery, burnt bacon... Oh, oh, oh! Oh, I'm sorry, I thought my Dark Lord of the Sith could protect a small thermal exhaust port that's only two meters wide! That thing wasn't even fully paid off yet!... Do you - do you have ANY idea what this is going to do to my credit?

[phone beeps, he sighs]

Palpatine: Hang on, I've got another call.

[switches line]

Palpatine: WHAT? I'm very busy right now!... Oh! Oh, well - well, where are they going?... Oh, all right, uh... just get me a turkey club... Um, coleslaw, I guess. I'm not even gonna eat it... Well, what are you getting?... See, I always order the wrong thing. No, no, I'll just stick with that. OK, bye - what?... Oh, uh, Cherry Coke. Thanks.

[switches line]

Palpatine: Sorry about that.

[sighs]

Palpatine: What?... Oh, oh, "just rebuild it"? Oh, real ****ing original. And who's going to give me a loan, jackhole, you?... You got an ATM on that torso Lite-Brite? Now get your seven-foot-two asthmatic *** back here, or I'm going to tell everyone what a whiny ***** you were about Padama-may or Panda Bear or whatever the hell her name is!...

[covers receiver]

Palpatine: Oh, jeez, he's crying!

[giggles, then into phone]

Palpatine: Hey, hey, hey, hey. C'mon. C'mon, don't do that. Just - just. Look, you know, I'm just dealing with a lot of crap right now. Death Star blown up by a bunch of ****in' teenagers, you know? I didn't mean to snap.

[makes "jack-off" motion]

Palpatine: Oh, uh - just get back here. OK. OK. Bye. I... um... I...

Palpatine: [whispers into phone] I love you, too.

Watched Trumbo last night. My brother got it as a screener. It was really good! I had no idea that actually happened.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Shirtless,

I love that scene! The Robot Chicken Star Wars special rules!

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

American Sniper. It was pretty decent. Bradley Cooper was great despite the Sling Blade chin, the supporting cast was good as well. The actions scenes were smartly composed, but overall it was a bit disjointed. However, if not intentional it actually served it well as that's how Kyle must have felt having to go back and forth between the battlefield and home so many times.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

The Littlest Rebel was on earlier. Let's just say, Shirley Temple in blackface cannot be unseen  , even if her character was just trying to hide from Union looters.

WOW. I might have to check that out, if only for historical significance.

It's not a bad movie, though a fairly typical "play the peacemaker" plot for her. She's a good pair for Bojangles. That said, brutal racial stereotyping, and the ending is silly.

Would be an interesting flick to show kids old enough to understand, and then discuss the racial differences, attitudes of the time period, etc. afterward.

Bingo on my interest in this movie. I try to place myself in the time period that the movie was set in. :)

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Saw Joy yesterday. Good, not great. Not disappointed with my two hours, though. One thing I appreciated about the movie is it's a movie about a single mom (basically), but it's NOT a love story. There's no romantic interest (and it would have been so easy to pair Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper). Not that I don't appreciate a love story once in awhile, but not every movie needs to have one.

Ted 2. Not sure why I decided to watch it since I wasn't a big fan of the first one, but surprisingly I like this one more.

Mad Max - Fury Road. Booooring

The Martian. Very good. It was Apollo 13 meets The Castaway. A bit far-fetched but it's visually appealing and Damon is very likable in this.

It's supposedly the opposite of far fetched. The guy who wrote it created it as an online collaborative effort attempting to create a scientifically accurate summary of the engineering it would take.

'spies like us' is on. so stupid it's perfect. :D

Maybe so I guess. :p

Birdman - loved this one although it bordered on falling prey to the Hollywood chicanery it was calling to task - pretentiousness and self-absorption. Despite that it was a good story, and while some scenes did drag on a bit Keaton, Stone and Norton were excellent.
