The Karate Kid

Caught it last night on AMC. The good version, not the Will Smith one. I still can't get over how rushed the ending is. It's like they had a time limit and spent way too much time on plot development, before realizing there was only ten minutes left and they had to write in the tournament still.

Also, how come the punch to Daniel's head didn't count for a point, but Daniel's falcon kick right in the face did? Or why do they let him continue through a doctor's diagnosis on what is most likely a torn ACL? And why is Johnny even allowed to compete when he clearly should have been disqualified for unsportsmanlike behavior and obvious anger issues earlier in the tournament?

Dude. It's just a movie.

Guys were tougher thirty years ago. Short of tearing off Daniel's limb and then beating Daniel with said limb, Johnny wasn't going to get a DQ and Daniel wasn't going to back down. Teenage boys were actually salty grunts back in the 1980s.

Dont worry tomorrow is the last one...until she makes me watch Harry Potter!! If those suck then I might go full on Scooby on the bit :D

The Potter films were acceptable adaptations. Be forewarned that the first 2 are a drag, and 3 & 4 are just the buildup (kind of like the books). That said, once the kids grow up slightly and the adult actors start wholly devouring the scenery (especially HBC's Bellatrix and Rickman's Snape), it's on.

They were more faithful to the source material than The Hobbit "trilogy" anyway, although I don't necessary consider myself as big a hater of that bloated cash grab as you.

I am a bit over the top about it...though I never saw the third one

BTW on the Karate Kid we discuss it in my karate class all the time! I ****ed near ruined the movie for my teacher when I told him Daniel, by the rules, should have been disqualified for his kick and Johnny should have won. (the man who plays the ref in the movie should know, he practically invented tournament style point fighting) We had a good laugh about the inaccuracies of the film. If you want to have real fun though have someone from Minnesota point out all the stupidity in Mighty Ducks ;)

Plus, they got considerably darker in theme as the series went on. The first two, for want of a better term, were kid's flicks, fun and magical, with just a little spookiness thrown in to get them to cover their eyes and scream. As 3 and 4 built up, the darkness became more apparent, the films became more "adult" if you will, and the last few were almost full-on grim.

In this regard, JKR was very sharp in crafting the whole tale. She hooked in a big audience at an innocent age, then grew up with them.

Yeah, it's harder for me, being well-beyond the target age group for these when they first came out, to think about it, but the 9 and 10 year olds that went to see the first couple films, were in college when the last couple came out. As the book/movie themes matured, they had a maturing audience to play to as well, an audience ready to embrace darker, more adult, themes.

They keep releasing these in new packaging all the time, but last year at Black Friday time, you could pick up pretty much every dvd for around $5. I'm not really a huge fan, so don't really care about collectible sets/special features etc, so maybe I should consider picking up these barebones sets on the cheap, just to have them in the collection.

I was thinking in terms of the books. Sorcerer's Stone came out in 1998 (in the US), which was 5th/6th grade for me. Deathly Hallows was released July 2007, and that was the summer between my sophomore and junior year at MTU.

Lawrence was indeed wonderful in Winter's Bone, as was the rest of the cast and writing. I need to watch that again.

Victoria: You know all those people, Teardrop. You could ask.
Teardrop: Shut up.
Victoria: None of them's gonna be in a great big hurry to tangle with you.
Teardrop: I said shut up once already, with my mouth.

Lots of great lines in that movie that are rather bothersome to any civilized person. ;)

The Salvation. Mads Mikkleson is a Danish settler in the old west who kills the man who murdered his wife and child, earning the enmity of the man's brother, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who holds the town under his control using a particularly brutal sort of justice. Fairly ordinary Western plot of revenge and one man taking on an entire corrupt gang, but some nice performances and set designs make it worthwhile viewing. Eva Green has a supporting role as the dead man's wife, and she manages to keep her clothes on the entire movie. And Mads Mikkleson.

Ex Machina: Very well done, and one that keeps you guessing until mere minutes before the resolution. No matter how you think it's going to play out at first, you're going to start doubting your choice, and then circle back to it and go away from it again. Great mind benders used throughout the movie.

Saw this movie a few months ago and totally agree. About halfway through, I was convinced that I had figured it out and was totally taken aback by how the movie ended. It was really really good.

In addition to all that, it's also just a very well made movie. Good acting, great writing, lots of fascinating philosophical considerations.

I love those movies. You see all the possible solutions, you figure out which one it probably is, then you think...well, if *I* think that, I bet the director is going to throw a curve in there. But that would be obvious, so he DOESN'T throw a curve. Or maybe he does a double curve. AUGH! ;)

The Long Way Down:

Former TV talk show host, who was a bit of a celebrity, decides to kill himself by jumping off of a building on NYE. Trouble is, 3 others thought of the same thing, and they all happen to be there at the same time.

Really good movie. Drama, inspiration, sadness, black humor, etc. I thought it'd be a one location type of movie (think: Reservoir Dogs) and it wasn't. The story was about what I expected, and it was done very well. I do recommend this movie.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

So last week I saw the last Hunger Games...it was the only one I liked. In fact the more I think about it the more I like it. Unlike the other stories they let the characters breathe in this one. Sure the ending was predictable (even to me who never read the books) but seeing well rounded characters with emotions and depth was nice. Seeing the machinations of the revolution and the downfall of Snow was a lot of fun. I felt there was a purpose to almost everything that was happening.

I read some reviews and t seems people dislike the movie for the reasons I like it. I get that.

On another note check out the reviews for Creed...I really want to see that move!
