Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Field Of Dreams may just be the most perfect movie ever. (repeating, but)

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Dude's unkillable. Sucked out of a speeding train? So what, big deal. He'll be back.

Ooooh, a Buckaroo Banzai reference. Me likey.

In my entire life, I have met three people who have seen that movie, an all-time favorite of mine. Bought the DVD just this past summer.

You'll appreciate this. I took my cat to the vet this morning. His name was Dr. Lizardo. Not Emilio, though, Rudy. :-(

The Best Offer:

A master auctioneer becomes obsessed with an extremely reclusive heiress who collects fine art. That's the simple summary. Tremendous movie. Very dry and methodical, but very much well worth it. There are some things that push it over the top for me; obviously can't say, due to spoilers.

I went and saw Spotlight...that will ruin your night ;)

Very well done movie but yeesh!

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

So was Mr. Wizard.

So many great quotes from that film.

My Little Chickadee:

The only time Mae West and WC Fields were in a movie together, so of course I had to check it out. It was meh. Just kind of felt like everyone mailed it in. I read up on it after watching, and sounds like Fields was kind of an arse, and many of his scenes were done by a double, since he left production part of the way through. Unless you're a superfan of Fields/West, you could pass on this movie and not miss much.

West goes through with a sham marriage to Fields (he doesn't realize it's a sham), and later, when Fields is accused of being a bandit, it's West to the rescue.

Looking for a recently released to video (or at least unofficial online release :)) family movie to watch today - preferably action or maybe horror, not comic book/super hero, can be PG-13, maybe R depending upon the reason for the rating.

Gravity. Interstellar.

My Little Chickadee:

Is that the one with the line "come up and see me sometime"?

I recall it being better than meh. It's not amazing, though. Fields in particular made several really poor movies, especially once he had become an alcoholic. But some, like "The Bank Dick," are brilliant.

For West, "She Done Him Wrong" is outstanding (she upstages Cary Grant, albeit when he is about 25). West was already 40 when she left Broadway and went to movies. It's too bad we have nothing of her when she was younger. Her sexuality is always knowing; it would be fascinating to see her when she was more of an ingenue.

She Done Him Wrong was the original "Come up and see me" line, and that movie is outstanding (own it). This movie DOES have that line, although WC Fields says a version of it, while West says Fields' "Chickadee" line. A nice homage to each other.

That's right; I remember now.

I might check out more Fields movies, dad is a big fan. But if "Chickadee" is the standard, I really don't have high expectations for his humor in movies, despite some of his classic quips.

Fields' best is vaudeville slapstick and insult comedy. One thing I enjoy about him is despite a lot of his humor being physical it's the little things that make it great. He was a magician so he has wonderful hands and he can do misdirection even with his acting. His interactions with children have IMHO never been equalled for wit and even a very strange sort of pathos.

Fields was edgy in his time, but it's almost impossible to feel that now because (1) his persona was so influential that any fifth grader can do a Fields impression, and (2) his snark -- original and shocking in his performances -- loses its sting now that snark is a kind of ubiquitous, hack, back-lighting.

Went to the movies for the first time since February. Saw "Brooklyn" - really enjoyed it (I liked the book too, although I didn't remember it that well). Definitely a "feel good" movie. Emory Cohen was just so gosh darn adorable.

Mockingjay part 2: Runnin' on Empty

This isn't a good movie, but it's the only one which tries to establish character in any depth. I kept thinking, though: after however many hours of this stuff you start to introduce your characters now?

The whole series is weird -- it never finally decides whether it's action, young girl aspirational fluff, country goose philosophy, dystopic high school government, or a sweet and gentle Coming of Age tale of two young gay men, Finnicky Cat and Pita Bread.

B minus (up from C plus for the ending which the heck with all of you I liked).

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

If they had put that much character building into the other movies the series could have been pretty epic. Outside the ending...you done lost your mind on that one ;)

Spoiler:

I liked the ending because Cat Mess winds up happy, and Cat Mess was the only character in the series I didn't want to feed into a wood chipper.
