Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

...excellent high school hockey in Minnesota ... no Minnesota kid in their right mind would play for anyone but the Gophers. But they don't. (VandeVelde, Parise, Goehring) And the situation is getting worse with every disappointing Gopher season.

Interesting to note that the best of all Minnesota High School hockey programs (SSM) relies heavily on Canadiens and is a pipeline of talent headed directly to North Dakota.:D

And this is your problem. UND used to have a direct pipeline to older aged Canadians, but now you don't and without all those older Canadians, you can't win a national championship anymore. You guys got spoiled always having foreign talent (usually professional) that was a lot older, and now that you don't you can't get the job done.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

According to a poster, Peter Chwialkowski has both an undergrad and graduate degree from UND. This looks like Sioux on Sioux crime.
There are a few native Minnesotans that keep their Gopher allegiance despite attending UND...

Lucia and Grand Forks native Grant Potulny to the rescue. Speaking of sour tastes, how does that feel for Gophers fans that it took a ND boy to lead you to the big one?
You do realize we've had quite a few Minnesotans on our championship teams right?

I'm sure they cry every time they see that banner...
What color is reality on your planet?

Wrong. His junior coach in Lincoln asked/advised UND to take him. Dean Blais said no and picked Tyler Palmiscino instead. So his coach then asked/advised Minnesota to take him, they said yes, and Ryan went there because the bridge at UND was long burned.
And what credibility do you have for this?

Goon's version was closer to what I've heard.

Hindsight is 20/20 but I wonder what Blais would say about this now? Did he decide he wasn't going to succumb to a father's demands? Or, did he just evaluate Grant's worth as a player that wrongly?

All coaches make mistakes on players but this one is one of those that stands out after time.
I have heard Blais has said, "It's our fault we didn't get Grant...it's Ryan's that he didn't come here."

Letting a player like Grant go to our major rival was definitely a big mistake...

Minnesota is tainted with foreign blood, there is no question. That includes the Potulny brothers, from that foreign wasteland. Now, the situation has grown worse, with other foreign infidels infiltrating the pure camps of the pristine sactuaries of southern Minny.

That said, UND has long allied itself with the Great White North, and has many championships thanks to the contributions of players from there (i.e., Canada). We are very proud of our players from wherever they are from. I first think of James Patrick from Winnipeg, for some reason. Many others.

It is no shame to admit you recruit from outside your own hallowed sanctuary, unless you are certain Minnesotans. Most MN fans recognize the reality that you cannot preserve the sanctity of hockey by some artificially created boundaries some time in the 1800s, aka state lines.

Happy mighta been a happy camper back in those days, the 1800s when the world was more black and white..

Or, coulda gotten bushwhacked by a roving band of Sioux. Who knows. ;)

2009 was nice in that the regular season saw a +3 improvement.

Another UND 'fan' satisfied with regular season accomplishments versus the Gophers. The real fans such as Goon, brian, Dirty, MNS, Slash, Mike, Dagies, Sic, SJ and others prefer championships.

I'd even add SloeVag in there.

I have heard Blais has said, "It's our fault we didn't get Grant...it's Ryan's that he didn't come here."

Let me say this again, Grant's junior coach in Lincoln, had a son on my hockey team. I spent a lot of time talking to him about hockey in general, and this was one of the things he told me. He essentially begged Dean Blais to take Grant, because he thought that Grant was the best team leader he had ever had in Lincoln, and he had a lot of good players there. Blais said no, he wanted another player. So, like most junior coaches do, he went to the next best option, Minnesota, told him how great Grant was, and that's where he ended up. Now i had heard all the same rumors about U of M taking Grant just to get Ryan, and I asked this guy, was taht the case(he also had Ryan in Lincoln.0 he said no, but Ryan wasn't going to UND after this had happened. Plus, i grew up with Ryan, and he has always been a Gophers fan. So it worked out well.

So as far as credibility, I think I have it, since I heard straight from the guy who was largely responsible for Grant going to Minnesota. Nobody has to believe me, that's fine, but that is what happened.

Well, I'll give you this: you are incredible.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

By your own logic you should have a lock on all the top talent in Minnnesota since no Minnesota kid in their right mind would play for anyone but the Gophers.

I agree with SIM. No Minnesota kid should play for anybody but the Gophers.

As sour as UND needing Minnesotan's and Canadians to win the big one?

No you haven't. No one that has as big a chip on their shoulder about Gophers hockey as you do would ever have regular contact with ex-Gophers.

Congratuations, you make the garbage that comes from SIM and SoCalSiouxFan seem downright palatable in comparison. :)

and that is saying something.

Gophers were not a better team than the Sioux prior to the 1980 Olympics. Only reason Gophers won a NC in 1979 was by sheer luck.

Speaking of overage Sioux players I love what Neal Broten had to say about Sioux defensemen Howard Walker.

How old are you? I would bet you are not old enough to witness the 1979 National Championship game or the 1980 Gold Medal game. The Gophers were dominate in 1979 and deserved to beat UND in fact Minnesota probably would have repeated if it were not for the Olympics. Don't kid ourselves into believing the 1980 USA team loaded with a mostly University of Minnesota roster of players were not good enough to repeat as champions. The fact of the matter is the Olympic team was loaded with NHL players and many Gopher players went on to the NHL.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

I will accept 7>5 if Sioux fans are willing to accept that the reason one has 7 and the other has 5 is the program with 5 was off winning an olympic gold medal the year that 7 was able to earn 1 of their 7, hence 5 not being 6 & 7 being 6.

So, how does 7 > 5* sound? Either that, or 6=6. :D

Even after hearing 10,000 excuses, I can now say I've heard 10,001.

Re: MN Golden Gophers @ UND Sioux: Arrogant vs Offensive!

First off i would like to say that I grew up in EGF and played highschool hockey there. I have always been a UND fan. I have many friends that are Gopher fans and we have this same argument all the time.

Basically back in the day almost all the good non-candadian hockey players came from the minnesota highschool system. It was a point of pride for minnesotan's and the gophers to be made up of all minnesota kids. Well times they are a changin'. Minnesota is not the only hockey hotbed for recruiting anymore. All schools take kids from canada and states across the country not just UND. The days of the 23 year old freshmen are long behind us so that argument doesn't hold water anymore either. The top kids are drafted at like 17 and they want to go pro as soon as possible. The gopher's arogance about this situation is holding them back. They would be well served to pick up a few canadians here and there for chemistry if anything else. They also could encourge their recruits to at least finish highschool and not accelerate their graduation so they can start their college careers early. There just are not that many Jonny toews type players out their that are ready to play D1 hockey at 17 years old.

Personally i would probably like the gophers a little bit more if they at the very least took more kids from the northern part of the state instead of all the cake eaters from the metro area.

If the gophers don't start broadening their horizons soon, they will be losing even more of the top players in the state because people want to go to a winner.
