Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Right here. It's offseason. I take (mostly) a break from hockey talk.

See you in St Paul. Well, maybe we'll see the Un-nameds in the stands.

We certainly won't see the Goofers in the stands if last year's games are any indication.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

The gophs have had a garden hose in their hole for a couple of years now, but man, somebody sure turned up the water.

I love the UND fans' obsession.

Feed that monster, boys.

And lose to BC again. That's always good for a chuckle.

Granted it is the offseason but I don't see the Gophers improving this upcoming season. If they finish in the top 6 it is a miracle and Don Lucia deserves a contract extension.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

So, you believe that with or without Leddy and Birkholz the team is Michigan Tech.

It should be a great season.

Oh how quickly we forget.:D IIRC you were the one hangin' around here last year ****in' and moanin' about how bad the team was. Let us not forget the fact that most of the returning players (which is who I was referring to) comprised a team that set historical records in futility last season. Don't get your hopes up too high for this season.

IMO Jacob Cepis is the most complete forward on the team. He plays a lot bigger than his size and is relentless in "going to the net", something most of the Gopher forwards can't seem to do.

I hope the door doesn't hit Leddy in * on his way out.

They couldn't even get by Yale for the opportunity to get torched by BC in the NCAA's last season.

Not only is MN in the toilet, but the rest of the WCHA isn't faring much better. 2005's all WCHA frozen four is fast becoming a distant memory.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Leddy's departure brings to mind again how much I dislike the "one and done" scenario. I get tired of hearing kids talk about how they are fulfilling a dream by playing at MN and at the same time thinking about how many years they're going to stay. Today thanks to the CBA, recruits come to college wondering whether they're going to be one-and-done, two-and-done, three-and-done, as opposed to saying, "What am I going to major in? What am I going to get my degree in and how many championships can I win?".

I'd like to see an NCAA rule adopted that permits a full college hockey scholarship only on the condition that a player stay at least two years. If a player doesn't want to make that commitment then play elsewhere. Scholarships should be for the player who is serious about being a STUDENT/athlete, not for the kid who wants a stage to play in the NHL.

I like it better when the goofs have a good team and stink it up all over the ice... now it seems we're just picking on the small kid...

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I'll take the blame on Leddy and Birkholz leaving since i'll be heading out to Marriucci for the season opening series. I will also be in Madison when UMass plays the Badgers at New Years, which is also depressing considering how much they also lost. I saw Schroeder leaving from a mile away (who didn't) but I didn't expect Nick Leddy to jump so soon. Was he the player who suffered a broken jaw and missed a few weeks? If so, tough way to remember your one year in the WCHA.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

So, Guentzel is good enough for Dean Blais, but not for Lou Chia? I think there's some players whose main influence in being a gopher was Mr. Guentzel. Will he be the next gopher coach after Lou leaves?
More than some players most Im guessing. Guentzel held players accountable for thier performance. He expected players to play for the Gophers the way he did EVERY SHIFT .

I'm a noodle-armed shrimp, I have to pick on the small kid. A fair fight isn't very advantageous to me.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

The Gophers will be fine. So will Wisconsin, Denver and the other teams that lost alot of early departing players. Hockey is peculiar. We (UND) could not win it all when we had Toews, Oshie and Duncan .... or Parise, Zajac and Stafford.

As for Leddy, et al, leaving early. If you could make $900K and play for the Stanley Cup champions ... or play for a WCHA team for $0 ... well, get the point? These guys only have so many years to make the massive amounts of money available to them. Nick Leddy can get his university education off-season or after his NHL career. He can pay for it with 2 months salary from his NHL contract. Or he can forgo approximately $3M and stay with the Gophers for 3 more years. It's a miracle he enrolled in college for one year.

hey, our offseason has been quiet, aside from huge recruits committing and mediocre players departing. None of our players are out there breaking the law. :p

Just wait 'til there's a lawnmower sale.

It probably is every kids dream to play for the Gophers (back in 1980). What has happened to the USA kid? They are more ready than ever before to play in the NHL. Before the miracle on ice many USA kids were never going to play in the NHL, that is why they all dreamed of playing for Minnesota. It(college hockey) was the pinnacle for the kid from United States. For good or bad times have changed. Time will never go back so we have to roll with it.

The NCAA will never have a condition of a player staying at least two years for any sport. If you want to watch the student/athlete follow Division 3 hockey because that is where they are playing/studying.
