MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Leddy's departure brings to mind again how much I dislike the "one and done" scenario. I get tired of hearing kids talk about how they are fulfilling a dream by playing at MN and at the same time thinking about how many years they're going to stay. Today thanks to the CBA, recruits come to college wondering whether they're going to be one-and-done, two-and-done, three-and-done, as opposed to saying, "What am I going to major in? What am I going to get my degree in and how many championships can I win?".

I'd like to see an NCAA rule adopted that permits a full college hockey scholarship only on the condition that a player stay at least two years. If a player doesn't want to make that commitment then play elsewhere. Scholarships should be for the player who is serious about being a STUDENT/athlete, not for the kid who wants a stage to play in the NHL.

If you want kids to commit for multiple years, expect the Jake Hansen's of the world to be your team's superstars. And specifically with Leddy, you don't know what he was thinking. He would still be on the team if the Wild hadn't traded him or Chicago wasn't in such dire straits to fill positions at the blueline.

Blame Tommy Thompson. I do. That clown should have been the first one fired when Fletcher came in.

The Wild probably didn't want to buy out his contract last year when Fletcher arrived.

Rumor over on GPL that Blais will arrive next season to save the day.

If true, Blais will be 60 years old next summer. Seems like a Band-Aid solution to me.

Leddy signing has nothing to do with "dire straights" to fill positions at the blue line in Chicago. I'll be shocked if Leddy skates one shift for the Blackhawks. Their top 4 is set and as solid as anyone's (Keith, Seabrooke, Cambpell, & Hjammerson). The only "open" spots are in the 3rd pairing with John Scott likely the 7th guy/extra forward for fighting purposes. Jordan Hendry likely has the inside track for one of the 2 open spots with Ivan Vishnevskiy (821K cap hit and 2 years of pro hockey experience) & even Shawn Lalonde (773K cap hit and at least a cup of coffee in the A) much better options based on experience/age and/or salary cap hit. Leddy at a 900K cap hit is not much of an option to address the "dire straights" in Chicago.

If there are significant injury problems in Chicago to dmen, I suppose Leddy could see some time in Chicago, but at 19 coming off a good but hardly dominant year of WCHA play, he is a long ways away from the NHL. Most WCHA sophmore/junior dmen who are all conference/all american type performers spend a year or two in the AHL before sniffing an NHL icesheet.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Tough losses, but the WCHA is a funny beast. Sometimes the teams that you expect to do poorly turn things around.
That's why I'm not about to count out UW/DU/UMN just yet for this upcoming season.

I love the UND fans' obsession.

Feed that monster, boys.

And lose to BC again. That's always good for a chuckle.

Those 3 or 4 UND fans posting earlier made the rest of us obsessed as well? ;)
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if we lost to BC again this year. They return a ton from a championship team. Eventually we'll have to beat them again though, it's the law of averages. Just like UMN won't be down forever either.

They couldn't even get by Yale for the opportunity to get torched by BC in the NCAA's last season.

Yale was the only team to give BC a fight last year in the playoffs. BC just steamrolled everyone else.

Thank you for the kind words and all, but the difference is that UW and DU were good last year.

Yale was also one of the top offensive teams in the country going into the NCAA's. That was a good team, no shame there.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I feel your pain with Leddy leaving...my condolences ;) .

A question for youz guys: IIRC when I was a kid following Badger hockey, MN was loaded with kids from the Range. Looking at your roster in the recent past, there haven't been a lot. How is hockey doing up there? Are the kids more spread out across the nation in D-1 rather than staying home?

...or were the numbers not what I might remember?

I didn't say in Chicago, I was saying that there were a few holes in Chicago, and while they've been plugged the AHL roster needed filling. I don't believe he's going to see double-digit games for Chicago this year.

The population up there is dying. Bitter arch-rivals Grand Rapids and Greenway will have to combine to fill a roster soon, they already have with the girls.

The ex-Wisconsin Governer is involved in running the Wild, eh? He's destroying them from the inside, just like the ex-UW assist AD is destroying the rodents from the inside. Hey Joel, I think tDon needs a contract extension. :D

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

good enough for the blackhawks, but not for the wild.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/...und-pick-nick-leddy-signs-with-blackhawks.php

Leddy was playing his college hockey at the University of Minnesota, but upon being traded by the Wild, one of the reasons given as to why they traded him away was because they weren't happy with his development with the Golden Gophers.

While this story is just a blip on the radar for Blackhawks fans, this is a bombshell in the world of the Gophers. Leddy is just 19 years-old and still filling out in size, so the likelihood of him making it to the NHL right away are slim and besides, it appears the Blackhawks want to help him develop into an NHL-caliber defenseman under their own watch.

Article makes me believe that Blackhawks are better equipped to train D-man. Seems like a good move for Leddy and for the Blackhawks. Not so good for the gophers and for the Wild.

There is no dire need either in Chicago or their AHL team in Rockford for Dmen. Dmen that played in the cup finals that are gone from Chicago are Boyton & Sopel. They've signed Scott and Cullimore and acquired Vishnevskiy (who is close to if not NHL ready). Lalonde played the entire season in the CHL before getting a cameo at the end of the season in the AHL and it was opinoined by most observers looked better then Leddy in prospect camp. Denis-Pepin, Stanton, Carllson & Connelly all return to the AHL roster. Leddy is absolutely a luxury and not a necessity either in Chicago or the AHL. My best guess is the Hawks were more interested in either accelerating Leddy's development by playing a pro 80+ game schedule or lacked confidence in his developing in Minnesota (or a combination of both).

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Sorry goof fans but the storm isn't over yet! Visiting one of my friends in minne who is a ticket manager at the mooch (i know he is a wayward child coming from ND working at the mooch), said Cepis had a splint on his foot Monday, apparently he has a small fracture in his right ankle from an accident suffered while participating in offseason workouts. :(

Anyone going to the Seattle series this weekend? Heard there is a goofer hockey fan special, lower level seats for upper level prices........they don't want maroon and gold fans jumping from the upper deck :D
