Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Probably.

Leddy gone.
Birkholz suspended, probably.
Holl coming in.
Gardiner coming in.
Rumor about another d-man going.

Gophers will be even younger this year than last year.

Scooby was Eeyore in another life.

True. The Gophers should still be able to hold off Michigan Tech this year.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

What would they do if Minnesota did not have enough competent players to field a team? Would they bend the rules to allow folding chairs?

They already do. They allowed Brian Schack to play four seasons.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Right. Replacing sophmores, juniors, and seniors with freshmen has worked so well so far.

Right, I think you're overreacting. Leddy had an "ok" season, but even Aaron Ness had a better freshman season than Leddy. I think the hype on Leddy is overdramatized, and it would do him well to stay another year and improve his game. If he does leave, others can step up and fill the void. I think freshman guys like Nate Schmidt who has a rocket of shot, Mark Alt who has tremendous athleticism and Jake Parenteau all have the potential to step up as well or they wouldn't be on the team. Lucia will have 7 "D" if Leddy goes. Justin Holl, who is a very good offensive defenseman, may get a call to fill that spot.

Birkholz didn't have stellar freshman season either. In terms of scoring, David Fischer had the same amount of points and that's not saying much.

As I said, neither one of these players is indispensable.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

With Schroeder, Leddy, Birkholz, the rumored defecting d-man, and Carman, Flynn, and Lucia as seniors, we finished seventh and missed the Final Five. Now you mean to tell me we're going to lose ALL OF THOSE GUYS and have anything resembling a snowball's chance in hell this season?

I just don't see any good coming from this.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Actually the correlations between the two are salient (offensive defensemen, Mr. Hockey awards, similar skill set, etc.). Ness still needs to fill out and develop his overall game. And yet although his freshman season was riddled with blunders, he had a more productive season (2008-09) than Leddy. The recent hype on Leddy is overdramatized and inconsistent with his performance and developmental level at this point in his career. IMO he's not ready for the NHL and another year as a student/athlete with MN would inevitably put him in a better developmental position to make the jump next season.

I'm curious to know if other Gopher fans agree with your assessment that Ness' freshman year was better than Leddy's.

They both had their share of freshman blunders (IMO Ness had more, which is my point), but as I said in terms of "productivity", Ness obviously had a better season. Can you prove otherwise?:D

Ness: 2-15-17 (37 GP)
Leddy: 3-8-11 (30 GP)

If they had played an equal number of games, Ness would still have slightly better numbers.

As far as the chance (or lack thereof) of success this team has without certain players in the lineup, I'd say the jury is definitely out on that one. They weren't good WITH them in the lineup, so how exactly can anyone say the team is totally *'d without them?

With or without the players in question, MN is likely to be an average team again barring unexpected explosions in productivity from players who haven't produced much in the past as well as a couple out of left field stellar seasons by incoming freshmen. I'm not holding my breath regarding either of these things happening.

But numbers aren't everything. Yeah Ness had better offensive numbers, but he was on a better team (not hugely, but still better) with Stoa and a healthy Barriball. Secondly, its not all about offensive numbers; I thought Leddy was less of a defensive liability his freshman year, and I thought Ness got thrown around a little more his freshman year.

Let's look at it this way: I'm a fan of a different WCHA team, and if you said that the Gophers would get one of the two for one more year, and the other was gone today, I'd rather see Leddy leave now and Ness come back for his junior yar. And I don't feel that Ness regressed his sophomore year, I think he did get better. But again, just one person's opinion.

My sentiments exactly. The only returning guy I trust at this point whom I believe has any degree of feisty consistency and promise of game changing productivity is Jacob Cepis. The rest of the team has empirically proven they either can't score more than 2G, can't hit the net, can't go to the net, can't hit-period or can't shoot through a paper towel. But they can cycle! Of course, John Hill's presence on the bench doesn't help either.
