MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Minnesotan's rarely go the WHL route.

True that they don't typically go this route. But Ambroze situation might mirror that of Peter Mueller, who committed early, then went the WHL route, got drafted and has 3 years NHL experience. Worked out for him to not go to the U after being highly desired by Lucia.

I wouldn't be surprised if that happened and it may be the best route for Ambroz at this point. Omaha has lost 4 of their top scorers (40% of their scoring) and Jeff Taglia (UMass), their goalie (30-10, .921). Seth did exceptionally well last season, but he also had a very good supporting cast. If he's going back to put up numbers, I question whether he'll be able meet expectations with a potential down year ahead for Omaha. He's a big kid for 17 (6'3", 210) and Seattle would take him in a heartbeat.

Too bad, if it worked out a "Cepis/Haula/Ambroz" line this season would have been cool.:(

True. And we don't even know what to call them anymore. Well, criminals I suppose, but beyond that....................nothing.

Can you at least get behind the name "Fighting Criminals," or would that be too hostile for the NC$$?

"Gopher-season Enders" would be acceptable I suppose.

Sure, or Gopher Killers would be good too I suppose. Although I still don't understand how the UND Fighting Criminals lost a home playoff game last season to one of the worst Gopher Hockey teams in history.

Very confuzzling to say the least.

I would not say the worst gopher team ever, perhaps most under-achieving? every gopher has his day....

Ambroz and Mueller are apples and oranges in some respects though. Mueller wanted to go to the U but he was unable to accelerate to get their sooner and he would have had to have played in the USHL one more year since he aged out on the NTDP. Ambroz could go to college right now (well, I hear he still has to clean up a bit of remaining academic work but nothing major). It's just a matter if his side of equation feel the playing time is there, etc

The other big issue is Ambroz is apparently a quality student. Something Mueller was not. Not sure Mueller was ever going to be cut out for the academic aspects. Sort of like Pitlick wasn't at Mankato.

No, you don't get to say that. The results speak for themselves. This team accomplished lows that hadn't been accomplished since circa 1930. That's one of the worst ever.

Needed the third night of beer sales.

Well no offense, but if he is worried he wont get to play enough then he probably isnt as good as everyone is making him out to be. This team has little scoring...show any ability to do that and you are on the top two lines.

Maybe or maybe not. Just because a kid is talented doesn't mean he is ready for the college game. There is a huge difference between a 17 and 22 year old hockey player. The physical part of the game is huge and many times teenagers are not able to play against a more mature body. IMO, the top 1% elite player can play at a higher level and do real well, there just isn't many of them around.

Whats your point? The coaches think he is ready, the scouts seem to think so as well it is his decision not to come in because he wants to pad his stats for the draft and he feels he wont do that on the Gophers. (allegedly) All you are doing is proving my point, if he isnt ready he shouldnt be coming.

This is a Gopher squad that could barely score 2 goals a game last year, Evan Kauffman would have been a Top 2 line forward on this team...if Ambroz is worried he cant get enough playing time on this team then he is not ready to come up and everyone should just accept that.

I have to agree with you. This whole situation seems odd. There is plenty of opportunity to be the "guy" on this team. How often does that happen for a frosh? Not often.

I don't think age, size or grit is an issue with Seth Ambroz. He's been playing against 20 year old players for two years. What I like about Seth is he's not afraid to stand in the front of the net and take a hit. That's one of the reasons he led the team in PP goals (11). He's ready for D1.
