Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I just sent an email of the story over on the RedStar to my wife (who is a gopher fan) and what she sent back was pure gold:

:D :D :D :D

as much as I hate tRug and the Wooger I hate Lapanta much much more.

Your wife has a corrosive wit. You might want to consider sending her to Betty Crocker's Charm School.

Doug Woog will always be the wittiest Gopher Hockey Icon ever. Some his lines are classic gold (courtesy of GPL): Wheelchairs,, "I couldn't say Kalinski for three days, now its like its growing out of my mouth", "He tried to dangle the big Johnson right there!", "Vanek went down quicker than a pancake at a VFW breakfast"

Another great moment was back around 95 or 96. I was waiting in the student line up at UND to get into the old Ralph with a buddy of mine who attended school there. We got out of line and went into the arena lobby to warm up as the gophers bus pulled in.

As the players where going through the lobby some Sue fan was holding a sign that read "Goofers Suck" and spouting off to the players and coaches. With the entire team behind him, Woog steps up to the clown and tells the kid "I will give you $50 for that sign." The kid thinks about it for a minute and hands Woog the sign. Woog hands the kid some amount of money and starts walking away.

The kid then yells "hey, this isn't fifty bucks" and Woog yells back "You are a North Dakota fan, I didn't think they could count to fifty, obviously they don't know how to spell Gophers correctly, it's spelled with two F's." All the boys on the team start laughing as Woog walks away and the kid just stands there with a stupid look on his face and no sign.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

It'd be a blast to sit down at bar in South St. Paul with Doug and just shoot the ****. I think he's lost a little bit over the last couple of years, but he has so many great stories and it'd be a lot of fun have a few beers and listen...

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I don't mean for a Badger to hijack the thread but I have to admit I'll miss Frank's always biased voice. The Gophers are my fallback game, especially in the fall. And while Wooger struggled a bit this year (Paul Braun has been having the same problem here in Wisconsin), he has great insight and his comments are usually right on, as soon as he gets the sentence completed.

But I don't get the Athletic Department's strategy of trying to fix what ails the Gopher players and team by firing the game telecast team.

That's my favorite Doug Woog story.

It wasn't the AD, it was FSN.

Awesome. Just Awesome.

classic msg board trap......if you cough up your sources, you're lying, if you don't, you're making s**t up.

Cough up sources? You claimed, "...it's been reported from many sources that he wants to come here....". Anything so public doesn't require bloodletting to substantiate. As for your your assuming he's interested, he may very well be but let's be clear that the only supposed sources so far are loungechair GMs.

Under 2 to go. You guys are hoping. Admit it! :D

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

You did actually watch a game this year, right? Doug and towards the end Frank, we're bordering on anti-Gopher in their call of the game. I was hoping the camera would end up showing Wooger because I was sure he was wearing an opposing team hat.

Um, yup. I watched them at least 12-15 times this year. If the Gophers are playing, they are automatically biased towards them (I don't fault them for that, but draw a line somewhere). Not every single call is a bad call, not every thing is a "bad break". Even when the Gophers aren't playing, they are anti-Sioux (Final Five Championship). When they commentate with no bias (such as the SCSU-Wisco game), I think they call decent games.

P.S. Nice show of class Gopher losers with the negative rep, i'm a moron because I have an opinion? I'm pretty sure you have an opinion too, which makes you all morons. But we already knew that.

I have not given you any negative rep. But I don't like your Gopher hockey opinion.:)

Woog practically goes out of his way to compliment opponents, and he has no qualms about calling out the Gophers for shoddy play. Frank can be a homer to be sure, but calling Woog the same thing smacks of someone that doesn't pay attention and only hears what they want to hear. If not grasping the reality of it makes you a moron or not, I don't know.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I'm going to miss the Wooger calling the Gopher games.
That's too bad, he had a lot of hockey knowledge. :(

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Ok, Doug Woog called for a 2 year suspension for the Frattin hit. Also, am I the only one that notices that Woog is borderline incoherent during broadcasts. Now I know he is the greatest hockey mind in the state (sad), but can we not all agree that he couldn't even spit out complete sentences? All it is is babble with hockey terms. Which is fine if your sitting next to that guy at the bar, but when it is his job to speak and he can't speak, I mean c'mon, am I taking crazy pills or does nobody else see this?

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I would also like to add that during the Cornell/UNH game Derek Sheppard just took off his helmet for a video replay and he was wearing an Under Armor skull cap. What a tool.

Ya.... I could have said that differently but I'm not going to worry about my symantics in every little post. It's a msg board, not the NY Post. If you'd like to call/email me and then I will gladly talk to you about what I know. But I will tell you if think Blais wanting to come here and the out he has in his contract doesn't specifically name the U of MN as a reason then you are mistaken
