MLB 2024: robot umps, please

Danny Jansen will catch for Boston against Toronto on Monday in the continuation of a suspended game. Jansen played for the Jays during the start of the game, so he will become the first ever player to play for both teams in the same game.

And he will be catching his own at-bat. He was down 0-1 in the count when the game was suspended.

I have never wanted someone to pop out to the catcher more than I do today.

In perhaps the most anticipated sports memorabilia auction ever, the jersey worn by baseball legend Babe Ruth when he "called his shot" in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series has sold for $24.12 million with Heritage Auctions, setting an auction record for most expensive sports collectible.

The sale of the New York Yankees road Ruth jersey, which includes the standard 20% buyer's premium, was available to the public for the first time in 19 years.

The previous record price for any sports collectible sold at auction was for a rare mint condition Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle card, which sold for $12.6 million in 2022. The Ruth jersey also far eclipsed the $10.1 million that a Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals fetched that same year at auction.

Chicago loses #100 on the year. They join 03 Detroit, 62 NYM, and 1899 Cleveland as the only teams to reach 100 losses in August.

It’s also the fastest a team has lost 100 since the 1916 Athletics.

They have to go 9-22 to unseat us as the worst team in modern baseball. They actually have a decent shot.

Tigers move within 4.5 of the playoffs.

And the White Sox nearly walk-off the Rangers, but instead get an all-timer of a HR robbery and lose 4-3 to get swept in the DH. 31-103 now.

White Sox get swept in their third straight series to make it 10 in a row. Now 31-107.

Currently have the worst winning percentage (.225) in the modern era and have to go 12-12 to avoid setting the AL record for most losses and tying the Mets for the most losses in MLB history.

.333 (8-16) clinches fewest wins and most losses in a 162 game season.

From @GrantBrisbee on X

"The AL Central is 38 games under .500.

The AL Central has five teams. Four of them are over .500."

OK - I watched the White Sox - Orioles game tonight start to finish (9-0 O's win). The Sox are that bad.
