Well, not really, but your point is well taken. One additional round would add maybe a little more than a week.
If baseball ever expands the playoffs (and I hope they never do, even with additional expansion of teams to 32) perhaps they could go back to the days of the "traditional" holiday double-header. 2 games each over Memorial Day weekend, July 4th and Labor Day would shorten the season by 3 days. Yes, the clubs would balk at the loss of revenue from 3 dates but they would see increased revenue from an addition full round of playoffs.
Personally given the 3 division setup in each league I thought the sport got it just right with 4 teams. You had to be really good to make the post season, and the wild card ensured that the two best teams over 162 games got the right to compete in the post season. The one-game deal now is exciting, but I think it disrupts the natural rhythm of the playoffs that we've seen develop for nearly 50 years now.
Apropos of little, the White Sox played 44 doubleheaders in 1943; the Phillies played 43. These are the league records. Given the 154 game schedule, the ChiSox played 57% of their games during twinbills. Doubleheaders were a way to attract wartime crowds with a 2-for-1 deal. Note that given the short game durations these doubleheaders would only last a little over 4 hours.
Many of the Phillies' doubleheaders were "swing shift" doubleheaders, with the first game being played in the morning. During the war years some games started as early as 7am to accommodate workers with evening shifts. People would sometimes go to ball games just to eat hot dogs, because meat rationing prevented them from buying meat otherwise.
Kep - we're both of an age when we can remember almost every Sunday was a twin bill and every holiday had 2 games. As a kid, I loved it. Even now, I like minor league DH's.
If the union would agree, I would play day-night double headers during the summer months while school is out. Fox could have one game and the local sports network could have the other. The effect would be to remove 12 days from the schedule or 2 weeks. We could start the season a week later and end it a week earlier. Then the World Series would not end around Halloween.
No, no, no. Separate admission DHs are a ripoff. Go back to the traditional day or twi-nighters. If you cut the season down the games become commensurately more important, which will feed interest. Forced scarcity FTW.
The owners have half figured this out: from the old 60k monster stadia they've cut it back down to 40k. The ticket becomes more meaningful and paradoxically attendance goes up. They're not too bright (exhibit A) so they haven't made the obvious connection that cutting the season back to 154 (or even fewer) games will work the same way.
