MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

I miss the days when making the playoffs was a big deal.

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

It ain't so for Shoeless Joe. MLB declines reinstatement. I'd have to say this signals there is almost zero chance for Pete Rose.

I personally have never had an issue with however harsh the sport wants to be when it comes to gambling and how these guys are associated with the business of the game on the field. But putting Rose or Jackson (or anyone else) in the HOF does not have an effect on my team doing their best to win a game I've paid money to see. It isn't MLB that needs to change it's rules, it is the Hall Of Fame.

We'd play until Thanksgiving

Well, not really, but your point is well taken. One additional round would add maybe a little more than a week.

If baseball ever expands the playoffs (and I hope they never do, even with additional expansion of teams to 32) perhaps they could go back to the days of the "traditional" holiday double-header. 2 games each over Memorial Day weekend, July 4th and Labor Day would shorten the season by 3 days. Yes, the clubs would balk at the loss of revenue from 3 dates but they would see increased revenue from an addition full round of playoffs.

Personally given the 3 division setup in each league I thought the sport got it just right with 4 teams. You had to be really good to make the post season, and the wild card ensured that the two best teams over 162 games got the right to compete in the post season. The one-game deal now is exciting, but I think it disrupts the natural rhythm of the playoffs that we've seen develop for nearly 50 years now.

teams aren't giving away free games. and the union is not expanding their working hours.

Interestingly, classic and twi-night doubleheaders are allowed to be scheduled according to the CBA. However, day-night doubleheaders can only be played if there has been a rain out.

Triple headers are also banned, unless the first game is the resumption of a suspended game.

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

Apropos of little, the White Sox played 44 doubleheaders in 1943; the Phillies played 43. These are the league records. Given the 154 game schedule, the ChiSox played 57% of their games during twinbills. Doubleheaders were a way to attract wartime crowds with a 2-for-1 deal. Note that given the short game durations these doubleheaders would only last a little over 4 hours.

Many of the Phillies' doubleheaders were "swing shift" doubleheaders, with the first game being played in the morning. During the war years some games started as early as 7am to accommodate workers with evening shifts. People would sometimes go to ball games just to eat hot dogs, because meat rationing prevented them from buying meat otherwise.

Kep - we're both of an age when we can remember almost every Sunday was a twin bill and every holiday had 2 games. As a kid, I loved it. Even now, I like minor league DH's.

If the union would agree, I would play day-night double headers during the summer months while school is out. Fox could have one game and the local sports network could have the other. The effect would be to remove 12 days from the schedule or 2 weeks. We could start the season a week later and end it a week earlier. Then the World Series would not end around Halloween.

Cut the schedule down by 12 games which could shorten the season by 2 weeks. Will never happen but a guy can dream...

No, no, no. Separate admission DHs are a ripoff. Go back to the traditional day or twi-nighters. If you cut the season down the games become commensurately more important, which will feed interest. Forced scarcity FTW.

The owners have half figured this out: from the old 60k monster stadia they've cut it back down to 40k. The ticket becomes more meaningful and paradoxically attendance goes up. They're not too bright (exhibit A) so they haven't made the obvious connection that cutting the season back to 154 (or even fewer) games will work the same way.

If you cut the season by 5%, can you cut players' salaries by 5%? The union may fight you.

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

LA has scored the fewest runs in the NL West yet leads by 6 1/2 games (only KC has a bigger division lead). No other team is leading a division and scoring the fewest runs among the teams in their division. Only twice in the 21st century has a team won a division while scoring the fewest runs among their division rivals, the 2002 Oakland As and the 2006 San Diego Padres.

I'm surprised there wasn't any discussion on the neighborhood play in the LA/SD game where the runner was called safe.

2nd base ump said he didn't believe in the neighborhood play!

From the Bill Chuck files — “No lefty has ever had a season in which he allowed as many steals as walks issued; right now, Jon Lester has allowed 39 steals and walked 40.”

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

Kris Bryant hit the longest home run in the majors this year at Wrigley. Estimated distance was 495 feet.

Re: MLB 2015 - Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

Nat up on the Mets by 6 on the 7th. Lose 8 - 7. The Nats are officially dead.

I'm at the Padres - Rockies game here in San Diego. If there are 10,000 people here I'd be surprised. It must suck to play here. It's so quiet! And such a dull game.
