Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Pudge is a HOF guy, and Piazza is at least debatable. I don't see Russell Martin as one. Seems like a knee-jerk move by the Jays. Hate to see teams sign guys just to appease fans when they'll probably regret the deal later (especially smaller market teams that can't afford it... hits a little close to home. ;))

Here's the timeline on the Jays and Martin.

A group of Jays front-office executives meet in a downtown Phoenix hotel before going to watch Dalton Pompey and their other prospects with the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League.

The group ranks the Jays' priorities for next season in order. Rebuilding the bullpen is No. 1. Free agent Martin is discussed and the conclusion is, "Great player ... love to have him ... but we have to prioritize."

Dioner Navarro was an upgrade over J.P. Arencibia behind the plate, but it wasn't like having Pat Borders behind the plate. While it was nowhere near the top of the shopping list, Martin was an attractive option.

"We weren't sure pursuing Russell was the right thing," Anthopoulos recalled. "We decided to take a few weeks and chew on it."

This isn't news. They've been doing it for years. They just don't catch any flak for it because the Yankees have been doing it for longer.

The 100 Yankee-Red Sox games on ESPN every year are intersquad games. They're the same illness.

They're also the only games that draw viewers.

This is a huge waste of money unless either of these guys is also a #1 starter for the pitching staff. However, rumors are spreading that the Red Sox have upped their offer to $120-140M for Lester, so maybe they've smartened up.

I heard the Twins got some new bats and balls. Compete with that.

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Red Sox should just go all in and sign both Lester and Scherzer.

Despite featuring the Redsox 5 times in their 12 regular season Saturday telecasts (and in 4 of the 5 the Redsox were the prime game) FOX had historically low ratings for their MLB telecasts. The Redsox are not even among the top 5 in local ratings for regional sportsnetwork telecasts. Granted the team struggled all season and that undoubtedly limited the interest. ESPN had their usual 30 or so Redsox broadcasts this season and they did see a slight uptick in ratings, but that could just as easily be because of the 30 or so Yankees games as the Yankees saw a sizable increase in their local ratings this season, ending a 4 year decline, much of that attributable to Jeter's farewell tour.

Try extending those numbers back to 2007.

Yes, the numbers for NESN were lousy but the numbers for ESPN (as even you noted) were better for the Red Sox and Yankees than for any other teams. Since the Sox have finished last two of the last three years, their numbers are down. However, since 2007 the Red Sox vs Yankees games (the 5 or so ESPN gets each season on Wed/Sun nights) have been the highest rated games by a mile. No matter how much ESPN loves the rivalry, if people aren't watching they will find games that do get the numbers. That's what ESPN does, like it or not. They're (ESPN, TBS and Fox) still stealing the Red Sox-Yankees games from NESN so we only get Don and Jerry for the Friday night game of a weekend series. Believe me, I wish they got lousy ratings so we could get those games on NESN because I much prefer their announcing crew.

But they have to get rid of Steve Lyons!

That's what the mute button is for :p

Give me TC and Eck in the pre and post, Don and Jerry on the game. Occasionally sprinkle in Wake and Rice when Eck does the booth in Jerry's absence.

Amen. Not only that, but the games start later and have longer breaks between innings (or at least it seems so). So the four hour games between two good teams ending at 11:00 have become four and a half hour games between two mediocre teams ending at midnight

...

I think that "Rem Dawg" has run his course, and he seems kind of bland and disinterested to me. I would prefer to see more of Eck. But in any case I prefer then to the national announcers. Kruk particularly.

Old news, but cross Willingham off next year's ex-twins roster.

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

The minimum salary for MLB players will rise a paltry 1.5% next year.
From $500,000 to $507,500
