The opt out is after 2019 or 2020. The Marlins backloaded it so that the big chunks come after that.
Actually, that's pretty clever. Now all they have to do is convince Stanton that they have no intention of building a winner, and they're off the hook for the big money years. And the big bucks will set an expectation for the Yankees or Red Sox or whoever decides he's a "must have". The Marlins' risk is that he sucks or gets injured and nobody wants him, so he doesn't opt out.

Have seen Panda rumors to Toronto and Boston. But what does Boston need with him when they just signed Juan Francisco? ;)

Stanton hasn't seen mlb pitching since taking a pitch to the face. He may not be the same player he was. I'd have waited till the season to make a long term deal.

Russell Martin signs with the Jays for 82/5.
Jeez... that's a lotta years for a 31-year-old catcher. Piazza signed his big contract with the Mets after his age-29 season, and that turned out to be pretty poor value for money by the end of it, and Martin isn't anywhere near the hitter Piazza was.

The Tigers did that with Pudge a few years ago and more or less got away with it. Although, year 5 of that deal was pretty rough.

Pudge is a HOF guy, and Piazza is at least debatable. I don't see Russell Martin as one. Seems like a knee-jerk move by the Jays. Hate to see teams sign guys just to appease fans when they'll probably regret the deal later (especially smaller market teams that can't afford it... hits a little close to home. ;))

The Jays, no, Jays fans, wanted a Canadian catcher; next they'll be after Justin Morneau. :D

Hanley Ramirez to the Red Sox. Somewhere around 5 for 90.

Pablo Sandoval also to the Red Sox. 5 for 100 there.

Who's going to play short? Remember, Bogaerts is still there, too.

Reportedly, Hanley's agreeable to a position change, which puts him in left field, which would mean that the Red Sox have a surplus of outfielders. Probably means Nava is gone, and Cespedes will be dealt (with teams knowing that he has to be moved, hurting the Red Sox bargaining position). Other possibility, which I hope is wrong, is that Bogaerts will be part of a Cole Hamels deal.

At this point you have a surplus of infielders or a surplus of outfielders. Take your pick. And yes, dealing Bogaerts to clear room for Hanley is an awful idea, at best.

If it were my choice, I'd take my chances dealing Cespedes.

Red Sox adopt Yankees player development model. Film at 11.

This isn't news. They've been doing it for years. They just don't catch any flak for it because the Yankees have been doing it for longer.

And, admittedly, usually spend slightly more, barring the very occasional year that the Yankees go nuts and blow everybody else combined out of the water ('08 and last year, for example).
