Yeah it's definitely better but still not great. Garza is good but not an ace, Lohse is alright, Dickey and Liriano are wildly inconsistent and that could really swing your season in either direction.

So David Robertson wants "Papelbon money"? And how did the Papelbon contract work out for the Phillies? I guess they're operating on the "It takes an idiot, but only one idiot" theory.

Worked out pretty good for Pap. Remember, there's at least one idiot owner out there who will sign a stupid contract. And it only takes one to set a market value.

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

I was hoping to cobble together a 25-man roster. Looks like a 40-man roster might be possible! :D

The 2015 Former Minnesota Twins 40-man roster:

Catchers:

Wilson Ramos (WAS)
AJ Pierzynski (STL - current free agent)
Drew Butera (LAD)

Infield:

JJ Hardy (BAL)
Justin Morneau (COL)
Danny Valencia (TOR)
Nick Punto (OAK)
David Ortiz (BOS)
Pedro Florimon (WAS)

Outfield:

Torii Hunter (DET)
Ben Revere (PHI)
Michael Cuddyer (NYM)
Carlos Gomez (MIL)
Denard Span (WAS)
Sam Fuld (OAK)

Starting Pitching:

Francisco Liriano (PIT)
RA Dickey (TOR)
Kyle Lohse (MIL)
Matt Garza (MIL)
Vance Worley (PIT)

Relief Pitching:

Grant Balfour (TBR)
Joe Nathan (DET)
LaTroy Hawkins (COL)
Pat Neshek (STL)
Scott Baker (TEX)
Liam Hendricks (TOR)

Wow. And no the pitching itself may not be great, but you take from that list and add to what they already have they could push for the division. Of course none of this works in a bubble and therefore you can't just assemble a roster like that without using your PS4, but still...

So apparently Oscar Taveras was drunk when he crashed.

Dammit. I so wanted it not to be a DUI.

Not just drunk. Super, super, super duper drunk.

Edit: I guess it's only .05 in the DR, so he was really only at .25. Which is still a lot and actually "super drunk" by law in the US, but certainly not at the .40 "how the eff is your body not shut down" levels I thought it was going off the American system.

Yeah I saw that too. Getting behind the wheel and starting a car would be a feat in itself at a .4 BAC.

Why are we talking about the Twins? I thought this was an MLB thread.

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Kershaw for MVP? yea or nay?

I'm wavering. It depends on what MVP means. Is it the player who was honestly the most valuable guy for his team? Does it matter if the rest of his team sucked? Or is it the guy who had the best season? Or the guy who was pretty valuable on a pretty good team?

LA without Kershaw is still good. Pittsburgh without McCutchen, on the other hand (or Miami without Stanton.....)

I think the voters have shown team success plays a pretty big part in their votes... it'll be between McCutchen and Kershaw, but I have a very tough time saying who deserves it more. Kershaw's dominance is hard to ignore, but even at his best, he only directly helps his team 1 out of 5 games.

Yes.

We find out tonight, right?

If you wouldn't vote a hitter who played 40 games, even if he was the reason they won 25 of them. Then you can't vote a pitcher.

Even if Kershaw struck out 27 batters every game he won so defense wasn't applied. I don't think WAR is enough to win MVP.

But McCutchen is not involved in every pitch in the games he plays, so I don't think you can weigh his impact on 1 game the same as Kershaw's.

Only catchers are involved every pitch other than pitchers. Also he's not pitching 9 innings every time out, and he's not getting shut outs every time.

What is the line on pitcher won it vs offense won it? 3 runs in 7 innings?

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

I'll be first to admit I devalue pitchers when it comes to these awards. It's not a secret. :)

They just don't go through the same season grind a field player does.

Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

Conversely a hitter only hits 3-5 times a game and the amount of defense largely depends on their position.

I think it should be harder for pitchers to win it than position players but not impossible. If you look at the allocation of MLB funds it's something like 58% position players, 42% pitching.
