Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

When did Ellsbury become worth $21.8 M a year?

He's 30, so he still has some years left and his stats over his 7 seasons are pretty good. 200 Hits once, 100 Runs once, 100 RBI once, etc. But its not like he had Pujols first 7 seasons.

Cano is only 1 year older and has been a much better player over his career. Pay him instead.

That's not going to happen. Spanks don't want to go over 175 for him. I don't understand this signing. Makes absolutely no sense. But good luck on that injury prone mess.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

I liked Ellsbury here in Boston, but he's not worth that kind of money or 7 years. Very injury prone and the way he plays the game (diving for fly balls, stealing bases, etc) isn't going to help the wear and tear on his body.

Unless the Yanks think they're going to get out from under A-Rod's contact, I don't get it. Ellsbury for Cano makes the team worse, not better, and they're still an old club (Jeter, A-Rod, Ichiro, etc). These long term contracts are almost always a disaster.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

As a Yanks fan I don't get it either. The cash doesn't concern me too much but the length does. 3 years would have been awesome, 5 agreeable, but 7 is just dumb. I would rather they have resigned Grandy.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

MLB Network reporting that Seattle(!) has offered 10 years $230M to Cano.

Hope he likes media graveyard.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Apparently JZ gets greedy and killed the Mariners deal. Seattle offered 9/$220's. Das Agent demanded 10/$252.

Intentional??

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Happy about this but really don't get the Ellsbury signing in light of these departures. If you're rebuilding, by the time the teams improves Ellsbury will be hobbled by injuries. If you're trying to win now, why not make the deal with Cano who's your best player?

The funny thing is, they realllly need A-Rod now! :D

EDIT: Just read an ESPN article that looked like a press release from the team. With the Sox, I don't think they're a better team with Ellsbury gone, I just think they can survive the loss with a championship level squad. I fail to see how the Yankees aren't much, much worse off with their best and most durable player gone. The infield is: Old and maybe suspended A-Rod, older and brittle Jeter, and brittle Texiera along with injury plagued Ellsbury in center.

It used to be said that the beer vendor in the Yankee Stadium bleachers was the 6th richest person in the country. Nowadays its going to be whoever supplies aspirin to the team.
