Also, he isn't exactly that rich. He's making the league minimum (400k). So how much could they really ask for? I feel like if you are kidnapping someone, the ransom value needs to make the risk worthwhile.

Yeah, I agree, it doesn't make much sense. Either these are some stupid kidnappers, or Wilson Ramos was into something that he shouldn't have been and this is a result of that.

Good. So I can now make the joke about how Venezualan kidnappers don't appear to understand American sports.

"We tell you to get rich, high-profile baseball player, you bring us catcher from ****ing Washington Nationals!"

I wonder when they realized their mistake. Was it when it wasn't as important as the coach of an amateur football team getting fired or when it wasn't as important as a league that's not playing telling us that they still aren't playing?

The Madson deal that they squashed was 4 years for 44 mil. So they spent 6 mil extra to get a more proven starter. Not saying you aren't right, based on the Ryan Howard extension, but not sure this is proof of that.

The Rays' are terrible too. There's something about Florida that just repels aesthetic taste. Florida State? The U? Yeesh...

I wouldn't mind the Rays too much if the would ditch those awful powder blue uni's. But I know what you mean. The Florida Panthers are butt ugly too. Terrible colour scheme and even worse logo.

I think the Papelbon deal is a bit of a mistake for the Phils, and it has the chance to be a huge mistake.

That the Phils have won 5 straight division titles with 3 different regular closers is an oddity in itself. From Myers to Lidge to Madson they've managed to work it. But I think expecting 4 more seasons of top form closing from Papelbon may be expecting too much. Closers almost never last as long as he has in the role. That contract has a fair chance of biting them in the behind beyond 2012 or 2013.

After the collapse of last September and Epstein and Francona leaving, expectations should be lessened In Boston somewhat. But Philly fans once again are going to be saying world championship or bust if Howard returns for most or all of the season, and especially after the stunning collapse against St Louis. If Papelbon has a bad April he may not come out of it.

Now we'll have to wait and see how many years too many they give Rollins.

I'm not too concerned about how Papelbon will do. After the meat grinder of the AL East I'm sure he will welcome pitching in the NL East, at least for the first 2 years of this deal. My overarching concern is that they had one of the better up and coming closers in Madson. And Madson is clearly a loyal guy. He signed his last deal at a discount to stay with the Phils and then he had a deal in hand, only to have it snatched away by Montgomery at the last second. I just don't like the optics of this thing.

I think you're right on Rollins. They are going to give him a Jeter-like deal to keep him a Phillie and get ever diminishing returns. I'd much rather have Reyes in pinstripes, but the Howard extension pretty much guaranteed they couldn't pay him the kind of money he's going to command. They do need to do something offensively though, or all this pitching is going to go to waste again.

Well said. It's (obviously) too expensive, and it just doubles down on their weakness that everyone is going to get old and mangy at the same moment, and none too long from now. They are committing the perennial error of thinking they are somehow exempt from the law of gravity, and that's how franchises drop off a cliff.

I'm not surprised that the White Sox went with someone with no major league coaching or managerial experience, bu I am surprised the Cards followed suit. Isn't Matheny's only experience that applies a stint as an instructor in the minors? Not exactly a lot of training to be a manager.

The fanbase is the least desperate in baseball. They can afford to hire a guy with no experience - the fans will be patient with him, and he's always been very popular there, so he'll be given an extra long leash. I wasn't surprised to see them go with a newer guy that already had a St. Louis connection.

However, it really is too bad they hired him, because I've always liked him. It's going to be a challenge to muster up the proper hatred without TLR and potentially, without Pujols. It's a good thing Carpenter is still around.

Additionally despite what many owners think, a Manager does not have much effect on a teams performance compared to talent.
