MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Prolly making room for Ryne Sandberg

Isn't that what people said before they hired Quade? Not sure about that.

So who has managerial positions open? St. Louis, Cubs, Boston... am I forgetting someone? I thought another underachiever fired someone, but can't remember who.

edit: I was going to suggest Sandberg to the Cards, but even I feel a little mean saying that. ;)

edit2: Theo says Cubs need someone with MLB experience, which is not Sandberg:

"The managerial search process begins immediately," Epstein said. "We are looking for someone with whom and around whom we can build a foundation for sustained success. The next manager must have leadership and communication skills; he must place an emphasis on preparation and accountability; he must establish high standards and a winning culture; he must have integrity and an open mind; and he must have managerial or coaching experience at the major league level."

edit3: It appears Sandberg to the Cards is not that far fetched, as apparently they are interviewing him.

I thought Sandberg had coached in the majors before starting his managerial trek through the minors, so he could concievably fit the description. Plus, this is going to be a young team if they honestly rebuild for the next two years like most expect Theo to do. Having someone who knows the kids already may be more important than finding the next Don Baylor, Dusty Baker, or Lou Pinella. (in fairness, Pinella didn't cause the best offense in the NL to stop hitting in October in 2008, but Baylor sucked and Baker's proven to kill pitching staffs).

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Darren Rovell estimates that any money Pujols "loses" by signing with the Cardinals will be made back and then some because he would be a career Cardinal in that city. He will have endorsement and business opportunities beyond what he would get in dollars from a contract to play baseball.

I have to add-I do think he stays put in St Louis. They will find enough money to keep his agent happy-just perhaps not for as many years as he would want.

But the MLBPA does not think much of the "home town discount". How much pressure will the union bring on the Pujols camp / Cardinals to have an AAV > ARod?

Interesting-there is no question at the current time he is probably worth the most money per year to his team compared to any other player in baseball.. The question in my mind-is for how long will he retain that? That seems to be the sticking point.

Since this is a hockey forum after all...

Tony LaRussa to do a ceremonial puck drop at the Blues' game tomorrow night. Chris Carpenter and MVP David Freese to be in attendance. Carpenter, who played hockey through high school, got to skate and do drills with the Blues before and after practice today:

Cubs: Maddux, Sveum, Alomar Jr, Mackanin, Francona, DeMarlo Hale and Dave Martinez

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Those teams should try to get Ron Gardenhire. That way we don't have to have him. :D

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Jonathan Sanchez to KC for Melky Cabrera. ESPN notes this makes Lorenzo Cain the likely starter in center for KC.

Cardinals interviewed Mike Matheny.

Mike Maddux has taken his name off the Boston list.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

It would be great if Francona got the Cardinals job so he could finally bring a World Series title to that long-suffering franchise.

If they resign Pujols (likely) and get a healthy Wainright into the starting rotation-their major need is in the bullpen and some defense in the middle infield. They have all the hitting anyone could want. They could be around again come next October and once you get into the playoffs-as they showed this year-anything can happen. The other major threat in the NL was of course Philly and StL seemed to just have their number this year.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

In his introductory press conference Dan Duquette said he was committed to building a winner "here in Boston."

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Why do we need a new thread? This one only has 318 posts. We've already discussed plenty of the offseason in it, even though it says *gasp* postseason. :p

This is after the season, I would argue that "post-season" is still applicable.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Seems odd that Wilson Ramos would get kidnapped. Usually they kidnap a family member of the player making the money so they can demand ransom. Seems kinda difficult to demand ransom from the person you are holding. It's not like he can just walk into a bank now.

Also, he isn't exactly that rich. He's making the league minimum (400k). So how much could they really ask for? I feel like if you are kidnapping someone, the ransom value needs to make the risk worthwhile.
