Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

give a game away?
By having a doubleheader. The old-fashioned kind, where you pay once and they play two games, not the day-night doubleheader where they clear the stadium out between games.

Right. I just assumed that DrDemento was referring to the newer, crappier double headers.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

You're not a Sox fan, I wouldn't expect you to get it really. Glad you have a crystal ball though

I used to be a big Red Sox fan. Twins and Sox. Then after two world series, amazingly EVERYONE was a Red Sox fan and always had been. It was incredible  . It became tiring and I hated to be associated with a bunch of jackb*gs. (Apparently you can't say jackb*g on here.)

If you honestly think Theo should go after ONE bad month, you're insane.

Where are you from? You act as if it's the only time that's happened with a winning franchise. It's always been that way and always will be. If you think my thoughts on the GM are based off one bad month, as I've said, you just don't get it. That's fine.

Did I live in an alternate universe in April when the Sox went through a 2-10 start? Look, I really like Francona, but let's be real. That collapse was......bad. If the Sox did nothing, people would be *****ing and whining just like they're *****ing and whining because they got rid of him. Something had to be done. He was the manager. I am not surprised he was the scapegoat. I am sorry to see him go as I feel it's more on the players than him, but he wasn't fully without blame. Everyone could be fired as far I'm concerned.

And I'm truly sorry it was so awful for you to be a Red Sox fan for a while.

I just think one down year is an overreaction. Ron Gardenhire still has a job and he has two former MVPs on his team. AND he almost lost 100 games after making the playoffs last year.

The Red Sox fans I knew before the World Series wins were great. Classic and classy baseball fans. Then it was like a metamorphosis took place and instead of a butterfly emerging, we got this:

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I've literally seen reports saying three different things--that he left on his own, that it was a mutual parting, and that he was fired. As a Sox fan, ownership shouldn't be making managerial decisions. They should simply decide the fate of the GM. IMO, Theo Epstein deserves the boot for his numerous blunders. At that point, allow a new GM to determine what to do with Francona.
What may be a big problem is John Henry playing Moneyball and become like Peter Angelos who for years stocked the Orioles based on rotisserie numbers. He does that, we're back to the lost decade of 1957 - 1966 for Red Sox Nation.

But it wasn't one down year. They finished third last year as well. They should have made the playoffs with ease this year (whether they did anything while in the playoffs is another story) and it wasn't like it was a close race for two months. They had a 9-game lead three weeks earlier. And lost almost every game to a team that was 30 games out of first place. Now, don't get me wrong. I get that fans of most teams would be excited to be rooting for a team that is playoff caliber every year and we shouldn't complain, but why can't I expect more out of this team than I got? I don't get how the team could collapse like that. Something had to be off. Something needed to be shaken up. What do you think should have been done? Not trying to be a wise *** here. I'm curious.

OK, that type of fan would have happened whether they won the World Series or not. I totally and fully believe that. In this day and age, Jumbotron whores outnumber true fans in every ballpark, stadium and arena. You do realize you could probably find a similarly dressed idiot in Kansas City, don't you? No one cares about them so that's why it doesn't make the interwebs. If that's what made you stop being a Red Sox fan, then I don't know how you are a fan of any team because EVERY team has whack jobs like that.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Ok, the picture part of my metamorphosis analogy. Guys like this aren't the reason I left "red sox nation". If it was, I wouldn't watch sports for the reasons you listed. It was, in fact, the idea of "Red Sox Nation" itself and the entitlement that came with it. Everyone seemed to turn into a bunch of jerks overnight.

I do remember rooting for them like crazy in the 2004 playoffs. Hell, this was my desktop after the Twins got bounced:

It stayed up for months.

Fair enough. That makes more sense. If you had just said that in the first place we wouldn't have had to waste bandwidth with this back and forth. Of course, then I wouldn't have seen that awesome desktop thing. :) I do get how the rest of the world would get turned off by the whole Red Sox Nation thing. That said, as someone who has been a diehard fan my entire life (and the daughter of a man who has lived and died with the Sox since the 1946 World Series loss and a 40 year season ticket holder - watching his joy over that win in 2004 made me feel blessed to be a fan), the groundswell of fandom that occurred after that amazing series made me feel really good. There was something magical about it in a way and I think people bought into it. Maybe too much. But I refuse to apologize for being proud and happy for this run. Why shouldn't the team capitalize on that? I can only imagine what will happen whenever the Cubs win. It could put Red Sox Nation to shame.

Indeed! Glad you liked the picture. I can't believe I found it. I thought there would be no way to google it and find it. Amazingly enough, I just googled "2004 nike boston red sox wallpaper" and it was the first that came up :)

I can only imagine that joy. It would be on par with me watching the Gophers win the national title. That sort of joy is hard to imagine.

I agree the Sox absolutely should have capitalized on it. And, as a current Cubs fan (I'm a sucker for lovable losers) I'm terribly afraid of what will happen to the Cubs if they win a couple of Series. I would never ask anyone to apologize for being a fan of a team, unless it's for the Badgers, Sioux, or Packers.

Fortunately Twins fans would never do such things

Roy Halladay, if you don't win this game, I am going to hunt you down and choke you with my bare hands.

This current ownership is to blame for the introduction of everything "Red Sox Nation". Blame them, not the fans. Yankees fans have the same sense of entitlement. It goes along with winning and having a large payroll.

Again, where are you from? I don't understand how you've been a fan of three different teams.

Please, point to the post where I praised Yankee fans. Thanks.
