MLB 2011 Part 1

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

They are the worst, but I would actually count this in their favor. ;)

Boston Fan is hated because he beats off to what Matt Johnson wonderfully called "The Pornography of Despair." Yankee Fan is an irritant, but at least when he loses he doesn't think he's King Lear.

Are you implying that perhaps some of the 30 to 40 year-old fans didn't suffer all 80+ years without a championship, because Bill Simmons will not have, sir.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

It was tacky - especially bunting to make sure he got a hit. If he was bunting to help his team, he could've helped them more by playing more than barely half an inning.
I don't get the distinction you're drawing here, with regard to bunting. Getting a hit helps your team, whether it's by bunting or taking a full swing. So, while I tend to agree that coming out of the game afterward was poor, I don't see the problem with the bunting part of it.

(Especially because I've long felt that Reyes isn't actually a great bunter and that it isn't actually even a way to make sure to get a hit.)

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Didn't generalize to say New York fans are worse just because I'm from Boston. Just saying Boston fans aren't worse. They're on par. Also, I'd hardly call a 3 month experience and a 5 month experience a fair comparison.

Oh noes, not that evil "Yankees Suck" chant. Boston fans are thew worst!!! Now, I happen to think that chant is stupid, but if your entire argument as to why Boston fans are "worse" revolves around a "Yankees Suck" chant? Wow.

Okay, the "Yankees suck" chant at a Bruins Stanley Cup parade?

At least the "Let's go Red Wings" chant on Thanksgiving a few years ago in Detroit was because the team actually involved in the event sucked balls.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

The Cardinals are the only NL team with a winning record against the Phillies this year. This one could be fun.

Actually, the Nationals did too. Go figure.

MLB schedules Atlanta @ Milwaukee game 2 to happen DURING the Broncos @ Packers game but Philadelphia & St Louis get 7 hours between the start of their town's football games and their baseball game. MLB #FAIL

I wonder if they'll get the Braves to show up. They looked pretty depressed last night for some reason.

Also, Phillies stadium is literally right next to Eagles stadium if they factored that in. Also, ratings will be expected to be higher for that game so of course a prime time slot.

My point is he was not concerned about helping the team. If he truly wanted to help his team, he would've stayed in the game. I'm making an assumption about his intentions, of course - but based on the fact that he said before the game if he got a hit, he would ask to be pulled.

I doubt the opposing team expected him to bunt - especially leading off a supposedly meaningless game - and he had to be more likely to get on base than if he took his chances swinging. Does that help his team? Of course. Do you think his #1 concern was helping his team? See above. His intentions appeared to be completely selfish and not an attempt to help his team.

Has he attempted to leadoff a meaningless game with a bunt before, when he wasn't trying to win in a batting title? If so - then I'm wrong, and he'd do this whether or not he was in the hunt. Or was this unusual behavior because of his concern over the batting title? Not sure if I am explaining myself clearly. :) I honestly don't care that much, and I'm not going to get whipped up in a frenzy over it, I just thought it was tacky and selfish, and I would be disappointed (as burgie was) if one of my favorite players did the same thing.

He took the first pitch for a ball while showing bunt and so the third baseman lined up a little closer to the plate on the second pitch, but he's slow as balls...

As was pointed out in the Amazin' Avenue game recap, once Wright was pulled from the game after his hit in the 4th, there was one player on the field for the Mets who started the season on the major league roster... Willie Harris. I'm not so sure that Collins was even interested in helping the team win the game.

Edit to respond to your edit: Not this year. His hamstring's been balky towards the end of the season, so he's only stolen a couple bases and has not bunted for a hit recently. But, I didn't pay enough attention to previous years (08 would probably be the season to investigate).

Yeah, and I thank the Red Sox for knocking the '69 Cubs off the mantle for worst September swoon ever. Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of people.

Who the phuck cares what anyone else thinks of their fanbase? All fanbases have morons; all fanbases have really cool people. Anyone who judges an entire city of people based on the behavior of some fans at a sporting event is pretty stupid.

Spot on Priceless. And as for the Cubs, they're still a laughingstock in MLB. The Sox are right now as well, but the laughable Cubs could only dream to be relevant during the last game of the season.

You're not gonna get an argument from me...it's stupid.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Here's the whole announcing crew:

•Texas vs. Tampa Bay: Don Orsillo, Buck Martinez (Jaime Maggio)
•N.Y. Yankees vs. Detroit: Brian Anderson, Ron Darling and John Smoltz (Tom Verducci)
•Milwaukee vs. Arizona: Victor Rojas, Joe Simpson (Sam Ryan)
•Philadelphia vs. St. Louis: Dick Stockton, Bob Brenly (Craig Sager)

I also saw something that said Anderson would do the NLCS.

Yup-should have said of the playoff teams in the NL. I think Seattle had a winning record in interleague play against them also. Still think if the Cardinals had any sort of decent bullpen and specifically a real closer-they could have won their division. They have the best hitting in the league, highest batting average, scored the most runs and had the most hits. Offense keeps them in games and their bullpen and closer loses them. Not sure how many blown saves they have but would not be surprised if they were near the top of the league for the most.

Mets relief pitcher Tim Byrdak is an awesome videobomber:
