Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

BTW, the thing I'm most angry about tonight is the chickenbleep move by Jose Reyes and the Mets. Disgraceful.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I don't agree with that, but we'll see how this unfolds.

As a Sox fan, I don't think the potential was there to go on a run. They simply don't have the starting pitching necessary to win.

What are you talking about? Certainly haven't seen a Sox fan in this thread accuse the Yanks of tanking it. Just curious, you aren't a Yanks/Sox fan...who is your team?

dx is a Twins guy, but he somehow enjoys the downfall of the Sox. And not the Yanks. Which puzzles me. From my view, you kinda have the same feelings for them (outsider's standpoint) no matter what they do. He appears to not mind the Yanks, and hates the Sox. My mind kinda asploded.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Now to cheer for the Rangers and Cardinals so they can eliminate the Yankees and Phillies...but overall cheering for the Brewers.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Is there anything better than Papelbon blowing a save to end the season?

As a Mets / Reyes fan, I'm not happy about it, but I'm not going to go in a rage against it. I mean, I'm glad that the Mets finally got a batting title, and I'm glad that it's my favorite player in the MLB who got it. But, I'm disappointed that he thought he had to take himself out of the game in order to do it.

ETA: What about the fact that David Wright was pulled in the 4th after getting a hit. You don't think that Collins wanted to celebrate his veteran's hits and then let them end the season on a positive note? What if Jose hadn't gotten a hit until the 8th and then Collins had pulled him? What would your opinion have been then?

Nah, I hate the Yankees as well. But like I've said a hundred times: I hate the Red Sox more because there's an implication they aren't as bad as the Yankees. Both are colossal spending whores. At least the Yankees don't pretend they're innocent. Whatever, let me have my schadenfreude.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

It'd prove my point, along with GLM's and some others lurking out there......Yanks want the Sox out. They want TB in.
Yanks GM Cashman was interviewed on 98.5 (one of the big sports stations in Boston) last Friday. He didn't outright say that he wanted TB over the Sox, but he danced around it enough that Helen Keller would have been able to figure it out from the broadcast.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I hope the playoffs are as dramatic as the end of the regular season was. Just some ramblings on each team. I am sure someone will correct me, as I don't claim to know every fact about every team.

Rays @ Rangers - (Texas in 4)
- Rangers have kind of been on cruise control and under the radar as they won the West. The Angels never really pressed them when they had the chance in Aug/Sep.

- Tampa expended a ton of energy just to make the playoffs. So it will be interesting to see if there is an early let down, which in a short series on the road spells trouble.

Tigers @ Yankees - (New York in 4)
- The Yankees starting pitching after Sabathia seems vulnerable, which seems odd to say when they just won 102 games. Thats just how I feel about them. But the Yankees can hit, and have a lights out closer. As well as a ton of playoff experience, if you believe that has an effect.

- The Tigers will go as far as their bats take them in the 1st round. They should be able to throw Verlander twice if the series goes long. If you assume he is his Cy Young self, then the Tigers should only need to muster a few runs in those games to have a chance at winning. Don't ask me how Valverde was perfect in save ops this year. I have no idea.

Cardinals @ Phillies - (Philadelphia in 3)
- The Phillies don't always hit as much as you think they would, but they don't need to. They have the deepest starting rotation I think I have ever seen. If they don't make the WS, this season is a waste for them.

- The Cardinals, much like the Rays had to press hard just to be here. They also had to use their ace pitcher in game 162. In a short series I just don't seem how they can match up in the pitching department. They could be down 2-0 before they see Carpenter again.

Diamondbacks @ Brewers - (Milwaukee in 5)
- The Brewers have been fun to watch. They have a ton of personality, and some legitimate MVP guys in their lineup. If they hit like they can, they will go deep in the playoffs. Adding in the combo of Greinke and Gallardo in the starting rotation is enough to make them serious contenders for the WS.

- The Diamondbacks are the biggest surprise of the season to me. They looked like nothing to start the year, and have a rookie head coach. But Ian Kennedy has been fantastic and they have had clutch hitting. Plus they have a trash talking PbP guy. :D

Having your manager pull you from the game is one thing. Getting a hit, then taking yourself out of the game to the surprise of your manager...that's chickenshit.

Of course he hates the Red Sox more...they've ended his Twins' season so many times....oh wait...

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Now do you believe me? This team was toast 2 weeks ago. This is why, back in the mid summer when they were playing out of their mind, I cringed when people were talking about playing the Phillies. THIS is the team I remember. Truly classic. Red Sox haters - laugh all you want at this. It's totally warranted. Go Brewers. And drop the **** puck.

If the NLCS is somehow Brewers vs Cardinals my head will explode. That series would be crazy with recent history and the '82 World Series.

The difference is the Yanks are huge spenders but admit to it without caring what others think. Boston spent decades acting as the anti-Yankees, only to become huge spenders while still acting as though they're somehow different than the Yankees. (And then there's the Cubs, who just suck regardless of how much they spend).

Not to mention, Boston fans suck way more than Yankees fans.

I hope that you're right and I'm just too close to the action to see it clearly. Cardinals as a team scare me. I know good pitching beats good hitting in the playoffs, but Cardinals remaining pitchers still look good and that Pujols-Berkman-Holliday combo is frightening.
