MLB 2011 Part 1

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I hope that you're right and I'm just too close to the action to see it clearly. Cardinals as a team scare me. I know good pitching beats good hitting in the playoffs, but Cardinals remaining pitchers still look good and that Pujols-Berkman-Holliday combo is frightening.
They should scare you, the cardinals have been playing out of their mind lately.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Yanks GM Cashman was interviewed on 98.5 (one of the big sports stations in Boston) last Friday. He didn't outright say that he wanted TB over the Sox, but he danced around it enough that Helen Keller would have been able to figure it out from the broadcast.

As a fan of the EvilEmpire, I can say my take on it wasn't so much we want Tampa IN THE PLAYOFFS, as much as we wanted to see Boston choke it all away. Ya know, partial payback for 2004 and all.

Cardinals got to the Wild Card with Pujols having by far his worst season in the majors and without arguably one of the best pitchers in baseball-Wainright. Thery have a severe deficiency in the bullpen but are otherwise a scary hitting team with very decent starting pitching. If the Phillies can get the Cardinal bullpen into the game this is a 3 and out series. If not, this could be one of the most competitive of the series to watch. The Cardinals are the only NL team with a winning record against the Phillies this year. This one could be fun.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Did you see the Rays' manager after the 9th inning, tying home run? They showed him in the dugout, and you could see him saying, "Holy s**t." :D

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

The difference is the Yanks are huge spenders but admit to it without caring what others think. Boston spent decades acting as the anti-Yankees, only to become huge spenders while still acting as though they're somehow different than the Yankees.

Ergo, Boston fans suck way more than Yankees fans.

FYP.

The major thing that makes Sawx Nation maddening is they still wrap themselves in a sepia-toned martyr complex even though they have become nothing more than YankeesLite. The minor thing, which is true of Boston in all things, is the unimaginably comical self-absorption of a city which now ranks in importance with, say, San Jose or Houston. The combination equals Smugness Just Waiting for an Excuse to Backstab their Own.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Okay, I've slept on it and here's my thoughts, as a fan of the Sox, but not a die hard. I love watching them, I'm a big fan, but outside of the Yankee games early in the season, I don't really get into things until like August.

Anyways...

First off, as a baseball fan, as a sports fan, that was one of the most unbelievable evenings I've ever seen. It was seriously something out of a movie. I had both games going split screen on my TV, watching with my roommate. At 10:00 we were both cheering on the Yankees and counting down the outs in Baltimore. Tampa's a hard team to dislike, they have a great fight and personality. Imagine if the Sox had that heart? It was amazing to see the rain delay at the worst possible time for the Sox, the comeback started by TB, and finished on their last freaking strike to send it to extras. Seeing the Yanks get 1st and 3rd with nobody out, and not score, the Sox fail to score with the same situation, and then Crawford (fittingly) blowing it. Then just like 3 minutes later Tampa ending things. As a sports fan, amazing.

As a Red Sox fan....I'm actually happy. I mean, was I rooting for the Yankees to win last night? Of course. I wanted to see my Sox in the playoffs. But they weren't going to do anything in the playoffs, and there's been something wrong with this team all year. They're tough to root for. I hope to GOD we lose a bunch of Pink Hats for this. They made their bed this month, and they 100% deserved to blow it, so I'm glad they did.

Props to the Rays, after last night, it would be storybook if they won the WS.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Moral of the story for Red Sox fans. Never Ever Root for the Yankees. We got what we deserved for doing so.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I did not find a complete list of which crew has which series, but...

Victor Rojas and Joe Simpson will call the Brewers-Diamondbacks series. Sam Ryan will serve as a reporter.

Brian Anderson, John Smoltz and Ron Darling will call the Yankees-Tigers series.

Is there anything better than Papelbon blowing a save to end the season?

Maine going down the crapper every year is certainly more enjoyable. But if you meant strictly MLB, yes, I can think of tons of things better than that.

As a Mets / Reyes fan, I'm not happy about it, but I'm not going to go in a rage against it. I mean, I'm glad that the Mets finally got a batting title, and I'm glad that it's my favorite player in the MLB who got it. But, I'm disappointed that he thought he had to take himself out of the game in order to do it.

ETA: What about the fact that David Wright was pulled in the 4th after getting a hit. You don't think that Collins wanted to celebrate his veteran's hits and then let them end the season on a positive note? What if Jose hadn't gotten a hit until the 8th and then Collins had pulled him? What would your opinion have been then?

Having your manager pull you from the game is one thing. Getting a hit, then taking yourself out of the game to the surprise of your manager...that's chickenshit.

Exactly. And for the record, a manager should never pull a player for that reason either.

Nah, I hate the Yankees as well. But like I've said a hundred times: I hate the Red Sox more because there's an implication they aren't as bad as the Yankees. Both are colossal spending whores. At least the Yankees don't pretend they're innocent.

The difference is the Yanks are huge spenders but admit to it without caring what others think. Boston spent decades acting as the anti-Yankees, only to become huge spenders while still acting as though they're somehow different than the Yankees. (And then there's the Cubs, who just suck regardless of how much they spend). Not to mention, Boston fans suck way more than Yankees fans.

You're right that they are both spending whores, but there's also still a pretty good gap. I couldn't care less about that. If certain Sox fans want to complain about it, try going after them. Stop generalizing. New York fans are just as bad as Boston fans. There's no difference.

Not even partial. It's not like it's the Yankees who erased the huge deficit.

Where do you live and who is your team? This is just tired nonsense. Who is trying to rank importance of cities? Who the hell cares?

It was tacky - especially bunting to make sure he got a hit. If he was bunting to help his team, he could've helped them more by playing more than barely half an inning. It was completely selfish. This is the kind of thing that will follow Reyes for awhile - a lot of people were upset, not just Brewers fans. And he had a viewing party at his house for the Brewers game? Sheesh.

There's something ironic in that statement, but ****ed if I can find it...

Also, having lived in NYC for 3 months and New England for 5 years, no, they are not the same. Boston sports fans are the worst. I don't see Yankees fans chanting "Red Sox suck" at a Rangers-Canucks game in February. I did, however, witness Boston fans chanting "Yankees suck" at a Bruins-Flyers game in January.

Aw, does someone need a tissue because the BEST TEAM EVAH couldn't even make the playoffs?

Didn't generalize to say New York fans are worse just because I'm from Boston. Just saying Boston fans aren't worse. They're on par. Also, I'd hardly call a 3 month experience and a 5 month experience a fair comparison.

Oh noes, not that evil "Yankees Suck" chant. Boston fans are thew worst!!! Now, I happen to think that chant is stupid, but if your entire argument as to why Boston fans are "worse" revolves around a "Yankees Suck" chant? Wow.

Aw, does someone need a tissue because the BEST TEAM EVAH couldn't even make the playoffs?

Huh? And, dude, you're a Cubs fan.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Who the phuck cares what anyone else thinks of their fanbase? All fanbases have morons; all fanbases have really cool people. Anyone who judges an entire city of people based on the behavior of some fans at a sporting event is pretty stupid.

Hopefully one positive that we'll get out of this is that the blasted Pink Hats will find something else to do.

* Philadelphia is an exception to this rule. We all know they are morons.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

MLB schedules Atlanta @ Milwaukee game 2 to happen DURING the Broncos @ Packers game but Philadelphia & St Louis get 7 hours between the start of their town's football games and their baseball game. MLB #FAIL

They are the worst, but I would actually count this in their favor. ;)

Boston Fan is hated because he beats off to what Matt Johnson wonderfully called "The Pornography of Despair." Yankee Fan is an irritant, but at least when he loses he doesn't think he's King Lear.
