MLB 2011 Part 1

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I'm no fan of theirs, but I assume their plans will include spending large amounts of money and winning a lot of games. Probably a fair amount of whining that everybody hates them, too.

Well, ya, but what have they done this offseason to improve on last year's team? I think that's why people are enjoying Lee spurning the Yanks.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Really? REALLY?

Next year will probably s*ck.

But Lee turns 33 next season. Oswalt & Halladay turn 34. Lidge is already 34. With Lee, I have to think their window is wide open, at least for a couple years. But it's not as if they're set to steamroll the division for the next decade.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Even though it makes the Phillies the best in the NL and maybe the best in baseball, I'm PUMPED Lee is out of the AL, and especially the AL East!

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Ditto. This is great. Take a great player away from the Rays and see a great pitcher leave Texas not for the Yankees but for an NL team?

Approved.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

All is not lost for the Yankees...they have made a major signing today! The Sox may have Crawford and the Phillies got Lee, but the Yanks got Russell Martin! Party in the Bronx!

Oh yes, he'll fit in just fine.

Probably next three to five years they will.

They already have been dominating since 2007.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

We'll see how they can hit lefties with Werth gone. Their lineup is oddly unbalanced. Time to load up on the soft-tossing lefties. Besides that, the team doesn't have many weaknesses.

If they can GET to the playoffs, (I know its bloody likely) they'll be dominant there.

But I've seen better teams fail to lift the championship.

That and I've been saying it for 4 years, but one of these days they will have a debilitating injury to a super-star and suffer the consequences. Here's to hoping SOMETHING derails them the next two years and then with their contracts they fall into the sea.

Are you suggesting that there may be a market for Delmon?

(actually just kidding, the joke doesn't work now that Delmon had a non-****ty season)

They had several injuries this past year and back in 2007. Nothing derailing obviously, but the same injuries have put other teams away in the past. Also, don't forget what happened to Freddy Garcia! :p

As for the lefties, that's definitely the weakness. Although it's really prominent with Howard and Ibanez, and less so with everyone else. Utley has a career OPS of .894 against righties. And a career OPS of .894 against lefties. No typo. And the last two years its been slanted even more significantly towards hitting LHP. Also, Victorino and Rollins pretty much only hit lefties last year. And Werth struggled to hit lefties last year, with only 6 HR and an OPS 56 points lower than against RHP.

Still, it's scary that the closest thing to a right-handed power bat can be found with Carlos Ruiz and Ben Francisco.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

The only positive thing I can think of with Lee signing with Philly is maybe he'll get a guest shot on It's Always Sunny next fall like Utley and Howard did.

Something tells me Mike Minor will be a factor in the Braves' rotation next year as our only lefty.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

The entire Game 7 of the 1960 World Series (Mazeroski's walk-off) on MLB tonight at 7 central.

Costas has been flogging this and tells a pretty cool story about how the tape was found (in Bing Crosby's closet).

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

So the Yankees signed Mark Prior to a minor league deal, and may be looking at Carlos Zambrano as a possible Plan B.... yikes. Desperation mode engaged.

Can we PUHLEEEZ ban the term walk-off!

As a colleague said on a sports broadcasting forum:

STOP, STOP, STOP!!!!!! When Josh Wilson intercepted a pass to win the game for the Baltimore Ravens Monday night, the ESPN colorman said it was "the first Walk Off Touchdown" for the Baltimore Ravens.

Geeezzzzz, the phrase; "I thought I heard it all..." keeps happening. A Walk Off Touchdown?! Sigh! What's next??
