Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Lee to the Phillies looks to be made official in the coming hours.

Edit 1: 5 year deal, "Considerably less" than what the Yankees were offering, according the the Dallas Morning News.

Edit 2: The Rangers have been told by Lee that he will not be returning to Texas and is signing with Philly. So much for the coming hours like I said a few minutes ago.

Memo to Yankee fans: Next time you want a guy to play for your team, don't spit on his wife. Thanks though, much appreciated :)

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

73 million for a rotation. Not bad Phillies.

We've got a three headed monster in baseball. Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox.

I'm still confused that the Phillies didn't just extend Lee before...they basically gave away Lee to save 8 million? I'd think their fans and the organization are a bit flummoxed by the decision because Lee could have come in handy in the playoffs this past season.

I don't think it had anything to do with his choice, he left what, over 30 million on the table to sign with the Phillies? This is where he wanted to be. He wanted to be part of the best rotation in baseball.

I've seen estimates as high as $54M. He has permission to say "It wasn't about the money" at his presser.

Honestly, starting pitching was not the issue in the NLCS, offense was slumping parts of the year and Giants pitching really was fantastic, too. And Cody Ross went beserk. I'm not sure why they were so cautious to extend him before, but if that happened, we might not have gone after Halladay. And never would have traded for Oswalt. It's better this way.

Apparently, his wife didn't want to go to NY. Of course, that could be for any number of reasons.

A good source tells me that Cliff Lee''s wife is the main reason he didn't sign with Yankees. She wanted NO PART of New York, i was told.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Darren Rovell says it is $48M.

So how much is $48 million? Let's put it in context.
Only three golfers have earned more than that in their career (Tiger Woods, Vijah Singh, Phil Mickelson)
Only one tennis player (Roger Federer) has ever earned more than that in a career
Lee could have bought 9.6 million more Gino's cheesesteaks if he took the Yanks offer
He could have purchased 549,136 tickets to Broadway shows

That would be pretty funny if a professional athlete chose to go to Philadelphia because of boorish behavior by fans. :p

Ya, they would have to use that as the example for irony in the dictionary :).

Whether that had anything to do with it or not absolutely does not matter to me. What brings me no end of delight, however, is that Cliff Lee found his best steel toe boot, wound up and kicked the Yankees square in the junk and he did it wearing a Phillies jersey :D :D :D :D!!!

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Poor Yankees. What will they do now? I love seeing their plans fail.

I'm no fan of theirs, but I assume their plans will include spending large amounts of money and winning a lot of games. Probably a fair amount of whining that everybody hates them, too.

Well, that part is right. :p

An article I saw said Lee wanted to stay with Philly last year, but Amaro wanted to get some young talent for the farm system. Then they tried to get Lee mid-season, couldn't work a deal and had to "settle" for Oswalt.

Still need to do something to replace Werth, though, or everyone will just pitch around Howard. Can't win every game 1-0.
