MLB 2011 Part 1

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

99.9% sure it won't be an issue, but if the next four innings are like the first five, we might have another Galarraga/Joyce situation in Detroit.

EDIT: And not an issue. Penny lost his perfecto on a horrible squeeze by the umpire, and then his first "hit" was a terrible decision by the official scorer.

Yep, Penny has an issue with the scorer. If Pierre made an error earlier, that sure as hell is an error on Inge.

And for the record, I thought both of them should have been errors.

Potential great pitching match up in Florida today as Ubaldo Jiminez goes up against Josh Johnson. Ubaldo has not been good so far this year, but if he lights it up this could be a good one. Too bad no-one will be there to see it.

If you do want to watch it, MLB.com is showing it for free.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

This is stupid. I love the MLB playoffs because of how special it is to get there. when a team makes the playoffs, for the most part, you know they should have potential to be competitive in a series.

I agree this is stupid and I don't like giving first round byes to division winners.

I do like the idea of giving teams a motivation to win their division. How they all fit this into the scheduling is an important question.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Tiebreaker games would be more fair if the team that won the division via that game got a day off instead of heading immediately to play a first round game. But really i'd prefer we went back to 4 divisions, 2 in each league. Play a balanced schedule and only have 4 total playoff teams.

Anyone who claims this is about bettering the sport rather than lining the owners pockets with more money is a tool.

So what happens when 3 teams tie for the 2 wild card spots?

Under the current playoff structure, a 3-team tie is broken by drawing lots, with the winner getting a bye and playing at the victor of the game between the other two teams.

I'm guessing with 2 wild card berths at stake, you'd have the winner of game 1 take one wild card spot, then the loser playing team 2 for the 2nd wild card spot, only to have the 2 winners then face each other in the new "wild card round" to determine who gets to go into the real playoffs.

Since the playoffs inexorably get longer anyway, and no one cares about the regular season anyway, let's just take it to its extreme conclusion. Add 2 teams to get to 32 (because I'm not really sure if each league's champion would benefit from a 2 week long bye or not if you stay at 30), cut the season roughly in half, ending at the all-star break (ok, so it'd be more like a 100 game regular season than 81). Use the regular season results to seed the tournament. Post all-star game, have long, drawn out best-of-15 series among the entire league. 5 rounds of best of 15 would mean an additional 40-75 games for the world series participants, depending how many rounds go the full distance.

If you aren't in the AL East, you have to win your division to see the playoffs. I think that is enough motivation.

With all this Royal wedding stuff going, thank goodness the only Royals I can stand to watch on TV play baseball in Kansas City.
