MLB 2010: The Second Half

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Still not as bad as the White Sox's pair.
Agreed 1000%

I am ok with umps apologizing for a missed call here and there, but I don't want to hear one every week.

They need to stop missing calls that are fairly obvious. Apologies don't make up for the call.

The ball was fair before the bag, and fair after. One would assume that over the bag it would be fair, but its hard to tell with the camera angles available. I will say the umpire did a poor job of following the ball and called it foul wayy too soon.

Technically he is supposed to call it as soon as it goes over the bag, not necessarily follow it. Then again, he's also supposed to call it fair when it goes over the bag, but hey, 1/2 ain't bad? :o

Can someone clarify the rule for me here? If a ball passes the bag on a fly, is in fair territory when it passes the bag, but lands in foul territory, it's foul. If it bounces in fair territory before the bag, crosses the bag in fair territory, then bounces again in foul territory after the bag, it's fair?

True. It did bounce before the bag so he doesnt have to follow it past the bag. But it was fair before the bag

I don't think thats the case. The ball bouncing fair before the bag doesn't make it a fair ball if it then goes foul before the bag. So either way he needs to follow it past.

Yes.

Well if he *Thought* the ball was foul before the bag, he wouldnt follow it past the bag. Its irrelevant what the ball does once it passes the bag if he thinks it was foul.

He obviously thought it was foul before or at the bag or he wouldn't have made the call he did.

He probably was as sure about it a the time as Jim Joyce was.

The fact that he won't admit he was wrong is the problem since the replay clearly shows he blew it.

Well if he's halfway competent though he can't *think* it's already foul because he should know it's not final until it crosses the bag.

Unless he was convinced one of the bounces was in foul ground of course, but he'd have to be really blind to think that.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

When an umpire is in "D" like Davidson was, you have to remember that he has to back off the line into foul territory to make this call... Although it may seem insignificant, those 3-4 feet can give you a terrible angle on the ball as it passes over the bag... The fact that this ball was "Fair" by less than an inch compounds the problem... At real speed, it's hard to judge in a case like this...

Did he blow the call? Yes... Should he admit to his mistake? Sure... This could have been handled better by him... I just don't like how people are making this seem like it's a super easy call, because it's not...

Let me ask you all this: If a ball is 1/2 in fair and 1/2 in foul territory as it bounds over the 1st or 3rd base bag, is it fair or foul? The rulebook doesn't define this... It just states that the ball shall be judged by being "on or over Fair/Foul Territory"...

The rule can be interpreted in such a way that any part of the ball touching foul territory results in a foul ball... Under Rule 2.00 there is not a clear definition of the rule... The ball was so close, part of it could have easily been judged to have been over foul territory... This is a lot tougher call than it's being made out to be... Just some food for thought...

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

The part that kills me is he didn't even turn around to see where the ball landed. That's unbelievably lazy work. It was on the chalk the whole way, at least turn your head to see where it ended up bouncing the last time.

I was thinking the exact same thing. That's the part that baffled me.

Since the rule is that if it is on the line then it is fair, wouldn't the ball be fair as long as any part of the ball is in fair territory, even if it's only .00001%?

Even if it did it would still be fair if it went back in before crossing the bag, would in not? Meaning he should still be paying attention even in that case?

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Brandon Morrow is having a special day through eight innings so far. And he's got 16 strikeouts. Holy bloody hell.
