Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Orr, MN currently holds the mark as of 1 PM at 28.27 inHg.

Not suprising there. I wouldn't be suprised if that record falls later today.

Interesting to hear people call this a storm. When I think of storm I think of short lived thunderstorms, or longer snow storms. Not a giant low pressure system hitting the midwest in the fall. I can see how this kind of storm could create hazardous waves on the Great Lakes.

They're likely basing it on marine forecasts, which distinguish between "gales" (39-54 MPH winds, sustained) and "storms" (55+ MPH). If winds top 74 MPH, it can be referred to as "hurricane-force", though the number of times that this has happened in the recorded history of the Great Lakes is small, and such storms are usually remembered by some distinguishing moniker, such as "The Big Blow of 1905" (*insert snickering here*) or the "White Hurricane" (1913).

They closed a mall for a tornado watch? Really?

Pretty much every night from June through Sept., Tornado Alley's under a Tornado Watch. They're meaningless. When it turns into a warning, then it's time to panic.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well. I was eating lunch at a restaurant that is attached to the Adrian Mall, and Paul Blart there came in to tell em that they were closing down the mall, and the places that had their own entrances had a choice to stay open I guess. Not like there was a whole lot of people there anyways. Pretty stupid if you asked me. Might have been that they just didn't want any Mall Walkers near the atrium in case the glass broke. That would have been a legit reason.

The Weather Channel is reporting that the record for the lowest pressure reading over land may have been broken near International Falls, MN. They have not confirmed it yet, however.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

There were a few home weather stations that were in the VERY low 28s

Oct has clearly been better than expected, but today is a rude awakening.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Yikes.

Someone I was listening to today (couldn't tell you who) was saying that this front stretched clear into Alabama. It started getting dark this morning, and I remember telling someone that this was the kind of day that Winnie The Pooh talked about when he said "blustery". The tornado sirens went off today shortly before noon here. We looked at each other and I made the comment "I don't think they're testing the system. They activated that one on purpose."

Per the NWS, 955.2mb was measured at 4pm. Pressures this low are rarely seen outside of tropical systems. Thanks to that insanely low pressure and the gradient that exists, we are going to be dealing with very strong winds for a couple days. I'm just glad this isn't January - if it was, I'd just call into work a couple times and not bother going outside. :p

Just checked the radar. That front that blew through here now stretches from Ottawa to just south of Atlanta.

Earlier today it started at around Brainerd/Aitkin, went SE towards SE Wisconsin and Northern Iowa, curled around the low pressure center and went up through the Dakotas, then continued to curl around going east through southern Canada, and curled around more and eventually ended in New Orleans. Monster system.

For the record, the 17th most powerful hurricane on record was only 920 mb. HFS. That's just... That's just insane!!

I understand the weather patterns pick up the Calcutta Clipper; swings down, swings up, lakefront influence, and out.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Schools closed in the Duluth and Northland area. If it was 4 to 7 degrees cooler in the Cities we would have gotten a foot of snow.

Orr, MN now hold the record for the lowest pressure recorded in the Continental United States. Which is lower than most hurricanes that have made landfall. That boggles my mind.
