Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Not an ideal start for the Gophers. Other than one terrible turnover near our blueline, our worst zone was the offensive zone, even though that's where the puck was much of the time. Not generating very many quality scoring chances...credit to Penn State for playing well defensively. I'm expecting the Gophers to come out much stronger in the 2nd.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

P.S. Not to nitpick, but according to the announcer, who otherwise is doing a decent job, Kelly Pannek and Laura Bowman were NOT high school teammates!

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Better period by the Gophers, but I'm surprised by their inability to generate more quality scoring chances against a mediocre Penn State team. They better focus and bring a total team effort in the 3rd, as they are just one unlucky bounce or power play against that would allow PSU to tie it up.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Whew, closer than most would have expected. Gophers got stronger as the game progressed. Despite getting outshot slightly in the 1st, final shots were 44-20 Gophers. Now that the first game, away game jitters are out of the way, I expect a more dominating performance in their rematch tomorrow night.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

The Gophs were kind of sloppy tonight; even Brandt was lackadaisical with the puck a few times. That said, Penn State is going to give teams fits. They're offensively challenged, but, like when they were in Minneapolis last year, they work their asses off and they don't give you much space in the offensive zone. Minnesota also did its typical lockdown in the third period, when Penn State had one, maybe two, sequences that resulted in decent scoring chances.

There was a good deal of hilarity on the bench that Potomak's first career goal was an empty netter.

It was one more goal than most of them scored.

She also created it with a very nice takeaway on the forecheck. Overall, I thought Potomak had a good night, aside from the tripping penalty. I was also impressed with Skarzynski.

Wow. Didn't know Hannah was on the verge of breaking those all time scoring records. (That puts us on a first name basis :) )
It should probably be noted per closing in on Darwitz pts. totals that Natalie didn't play a senior season.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Brandt could still catch Augusta for the all-time NCAA career scoring record. Of course, she'll need to be far more prolific than she was last night.

why should it be pointed out?

last time I checked, the record is for career totals, not the first three years

any footnote to it only invites other arguments

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

By the way, I think it's worth noting that Darwitz pts. totals were accumulated in three seasons, versus four.

;)

FWIW Penn State was one of those teams I thought was going to be a surprise this year.

Also brooky if BC happens to win the NCAA title this year i am expecting you to keep that as your signature for an extra 12 months :D

I'll go until the following season begins. :)

Not to take anything away from her amazing ability and point totals, but it's probably also worth noting that the quality of womens' hockey has improved tremendously since when she played. Not so much the ability of the top players, but today's teams have greater depth, and arguably better goaltending, than they did 10-15 years ago. As with any other sport it's hard to compare players from different eras...but it goes without saying that she was one of the very best in the world when she was playing.
