Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Hate to say I told ya so...

No #14 on the line chart tonight...from what I recall after a brief look.

Maryanne Menefee was a 'scratch'. Same thing beginning of last year wasn't it?

Definitely need to tighten things up defensively. Granted the Whitecaps have a lot of talent and more experience, especially compared to our freshmen who were seeing their first college action, but 4 goals on 17 shots is not good. One the plus side, the Gophers managed to score 5 on Raty, which is no small feat...

It was obvious they made too many mistakes. Against the talent the Whitecaps have mistakes are going to end up in the back of the net and they did.

Still, a solid opener.

There are pictures floating around on Facebook and Twitter showing off the team's renovated locker room. Did not know about that work going on, though Frosty had hinted that it was about time to do so.

Last I heard he was still looking for money. Must have found some.

Anyone get the impression Sydney Baldwin intends to be a little more offensive minded this season?

Thunstrom doesn't appear to have slowed down any.

I saw Sydney Baldwin in action in Lake Placid against the Canadians. She is quite the player.

Balwin is no Keller...But then who is ;)

I don't recall seeing Cameranesi and Wolfe after the first period. Any injury news there?

Liked what I saw of Potomak(obviously) and Skarzynski for the freshmen.

Stecklein assisted of one of the Lamoureux twins into the end boards. Thankfully no injuries there.

Pre-existing injuries, so the plan was that each would be limited to one period, per the coach.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

A couple of thoughts:

Most talented player on the ice: Thunston
Player of the game: Pannek
Biggest surprise: Williamson. She obviously had the accolades, but her talent stood out.
Defense is in great shape with Stecklein, Baldwin and McMillens slap shot.
First Line will be ferocious. Brandt, Cameranesi, Potomak, Stecklein, Baldwin...what is that an 3 Ms Minnesotans, arguably best player of her age in Canada and an olympian. Womens and mens take care of talent...not too big of a surprise that Potomak is first line.

Very strong outing for a first game. Seeing the warm ups I was guessing the Whitecaps had this one and the Whitecaps had a heckava roster. With that, the Gophers dominated much of the game. I'm guessing something is to be said for the intangibles: coaching, playing as a team, being home, etc.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

well that was entertaining
one lead change
and twice, just when it appeared the Gophers had won the game the Whitecaps came back
if they had scored with 1:04 left instead of 4 seconds, we may have been treated to sudden death

yeah, the John Rose oval
if you think you are a fast skater, go there some time :)

so Frost isn't going to play Potomak with Brandt because he wants two productive line, eh?
apparently after seeing Pannek in practice he discovered he already had two productive lines

something I probably should have realized from the roster, but didn't until I saw them on the ice:
double trouble
Stecklein & Balwin
McMillen & Wolfe
Cline & Skarzynski
are you kidding me?
while they have a long way to go to match the 12/13 blueline corp defensively,
offensively:
Double Trouble

My worry is that both Cameranesi and Wolfe disappeared from the bench after the first period.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

My opinion is that the best player on the ice was Brandt.

Thunstorm? Nice burst on the first goal and a couple of other nice rushes. But . . . the Whitecaps best player was very, very clearly Schlepper.

Potomak? Very good player, but . . . let's see how it goes. She is a frosh. Personally, she isn't going to have to do a whole lot more before I jump on the bandwagon. She looks to be a very good player.

I loved the Schipper top shelf goal, a real beauty against one of the best goalers in the world.

I thought Pannek showed an expected step up from her excellent play as a frosh. She is big, fast and talented.

Props to one of my favorite Gophers of all time, Sarah Erickson, for a high level, still on top of it game. I will never forget the goal in Duluth, top shelf glove side, that clinched the win over Wisconsin and the first championship in the current run of 3 of the last 4.

My thought was that he'd keep the top line that helped win the championship in March intact for at least a couple of weeks, but no Menefee eliminated that possibility. Both Pannek and Schipper played at a very high level on Friday, and if that continues, two scoring lines are likely from a number of combinations.

The 2012-13 group wasn't bad offensively either.

Baldwin is another who looked great on Friday.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

What was that about Menefee? Did I miss something or am I overthinking an earlier post?
