7-0 Gopher win, St. Cloud did manage to get 5 SOG so they were not totally shut out.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

I was again struck but the lack of effort to compete on the part of SCSU. They engaged in plenty of interference and hooking, but didn't really move their feet. The contrast with Penn State last week was stark. PSU has more talent than the Huskies, but they also play much harder. There wasn't much to learn about the Gophers from watching this game.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

The game tonight for me brought to mind the comment made long ago by the basketball coach of the small liberal arts college I attended after our basketball lads had been resoundingly thumped by the team from one of the other small liberal arts colleges that our lads regularly competed against (all of this is code for MIAC, but most of you knew that).

What he said in the handshake line to the coach of the other team I think sums up what is reality for Saint Cloud when they play the Gophers.

Too many, too good.

The Huskies don't really have a very good chance against the Gophers and every one of them knows it. Minnesota has too many, too good.

Total in the last 6 games is (IMMSC) 40-1. That is too many and not too good for SCSU. Maybe that last minute comeback from 2-down at their place tore their heart out, but I don't think the Huskies are as bad as they showed. Eeyeore is right that interference & holding was rampant, I assumed the game plan was to try and slow down the Gophers and clog the slot (that works amazingly well for BSU) but they executed that plan very poorly. Maybe they are that bad but maybe they just skated out expecting to get whipped.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Last year...

5-0
12-0
7-0
5-0
7-1

This year so far

7-0
11-0

That's a lot to very little by my math...It would be nice if they could save a couple of those goals for Bemidji. Not much else to say about this series other than the pass from McMillen to Stecklein that set up her goal last night was a thing of beauty.

There were several highlight reel plays tonight, Brandt's second goal, fighting through traffic recovering the puck after it was knocked off her stick and getting a deadly shot off was unbelievable. A sign of how lopsided this game was, the Gophers had more short-handed goals than SCSU had shots on goal on the PP all weekend long.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

I personally am very pleased that this Gopher team presented me with the opportunity to sit and observe a new NCAA record for goals scored in a period in a women's hockey game. I sat there and I really, really enjoyed the show. Thanks to the goal scorers (everyone can find out who they were by looking at the box score) but mostly thanks to the whole team for an incredible probably never to be seen again in most people's lifetime show.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Granted it's only 4 games but highlighting some of the numbers for the Gophers is video-game like and definitely not confection free.

Since giving up 12 shots in the first period to Penn State the following shot totals have been put up against the Gophers:
3, 5, 1, 4, 2, 3, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3... Total shots given up... 38 in 4 games.

6 for 10 on the power play for a crisp 60% and 8 for 8 on the penalty kill for 100%

4 shutouts with 25 goals scored.

10 players scoring at least a point per game.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

After last week I was assuming Maryanne Menefee would be back playing with Brandt and Cameranesi in due time after her return.

Way too early to know this, but after this weekend already those top 6 forwards look extremely solid and Menefee may have to show some good stuff to break back in.

I really like Potomak as a forechecker - she is relentless and very good on her edges. Not taking anything away from Menefee, but I don't think she creates opportunities for her linemates like Potomak can. I would like to see this line stay together.

Menefee has proven to be a contributor on scoring lines throughout her career. The big difference is that Potomak covers the ice better, so she'll be more of an asset on the defensive side of the puck in addition to what she brings to the offense.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

When Menefee does return, it poses an interesting problem. Potomak does fit in well with Brandt/Cameranesi, but Menefee has shown in the past that she does as well. It's also possible that the things Potomak does well would be more useful for elevating the third line that what Menefee does, so that may play a role.

I say the third line, because I wouldn't mess with the second. The trio of Pannek, Piazza, and Schipper is going to terrorize people.

Moving someone to the third line creates another interesting problem. Williamson isn't as ready to take control at this level as Potomak, but she does a number of things well and will hopefully grow into it. Brook Garzone is the early favorite for most improved player, because she's been fabulous so far; the knowledge that she is permanently a forward now probably helps, but she's skating well and is a threat to score. So, whoever doesn't make the first line when Menefee returns will probably slot in with them.

That makes me feel bad for Rodgers and Reilly, especially the former. I don't know that Reilly is the better of the two of them in a vacuum, but she seems to fit better with Williamson and Garzone, so she should probably get the spot on the third line for the moment. After Menefee's return, they should form 2/3 of a very credible fourth line. The question is who is going to play center, because I don't know if either of them can. Based on what I've seen through four games and an exhibition, my inclination would be to put Gunderson between them and then give them at least semi-regular shifts in all games.

The fourth line struggled on Saturday, at least until St. Cloud emphatically threw in the towel. I don't like making Barlow the center on that line. If you're going to dress her, and I'm in favor of doing so sometimes, do it as a seventh defenseman. It'd give the top six more of a rest in games like this weekend and would prevent Barlow from ending up in the same limbo that Garzone, Haley, and Jordyn Burns found themselves in, not knowing what their role is and not really getting better at any of the possibilities. Given the depth this year, Barlow isn't needed to provide depth at forward in case of injury, so let her develop as a defenseman and see what the results are. Aside from that, I didn't think she was a very good center.

Scored 11 goals on 24 shots? How does UM only get 24 sog against St. Cloud? I'd like to see that game to figure out how something like this can happen. It will be fascinating to see UW play them this weekend and UM play OSU, quite a measuring stick series. Could be a new number one after next weekend.....

8 goals in the 2nd period making it 11-0 after two. It was obvious they purposely did not attempt shots during the 3rd period.

I know...a strategy that would displease you.

Aside from what Brooky said about a third period that looked like it was played under a cease fire agreement, the official scorer was a bit slow on the trigger finger for SOG all weekend.

I would not place any value on this past weekend for evaluating line play. Because they worked so well in the past I half expect to see Menefee back on the line with Brandt and Cameranesi. Part of that belief has to do with Frost noting that Potomak was not producing the same chemistry. I agree that the second line is solid enough that I would be afraid to mess with it. But the thought of Potomak against any other teams 3rd line brings visions of a 100+ point season. If they leave Potomak on the first line that leave Menefee on the third which would be interesting but I am not sure she would shine there like she does on 1. But I wonder what Potomaks expectations were when she arrived and were any promises made.

Did not attend Saturdays game but was there Friday so I can't describe what happened Saturday. Friday's game however, was such a mismatch. Some other posters have described it as SCSU is whipped even before they take the ice. It sure looked that way to me. Honestly what does a team like Minnesota gain from such lopsided games? Listening to Dan on Saturday they literally tried not to score in the third period. Is that what they should have done? Probably...But, in a way, that is almost as disrespectful as continuing to pour it on.

The bottom line to me is that there needs to be better competition in women's hockey because what Minnesota and Wisconsin are doing so far this year is not good for the growth of the game.
